Woozi said he wrote this in the middle of the night, and it was very hard. (He's an INFJ and highly empathic.) He said he had to dig deep and face all the "demons" and negativity people worldwide are facing right now, and it became very emotional for him and HARD to write the song. The purpose is to express what I would say the majority of the world's population are thinking/feeling right now, especially in those countries where people are under surveillance (Seungkwan, a whistleblower, in the corporate world; DK finding a camera in his lamp and drones outside his window, so he smashes his TV which may also be spying on him; etc.), where everything wrong seems to be happening (Woozi doesn't even HAVE a driver's license and doesn't drive on purpose, so he probably would feel dumb trying to start a car and turning on the wipers instead), Mingyu having a stage camera fall on his car (just like the camera fell in The Truman Show...and yes, as others have commented below, there are SO MANY references to The Truman Show in this video it's unreal!) They're all trying to escape the "set", but keep getting blocked. Truman desperately wanted to go overseas, purchased tickets, but was too afraid of the water to go. Woozi has a ticket, but keeps getting blocked...just like Truman did. The only way Truman could escape was to put a dummy in his bed (like Hoshi) so the producers of the show would think he was sleeping while he ran away. It's also significant that S.Coups finally walks over and turns off the lights on the set. That's when you see the ocean, with storm clouds forming in the background....just like the director of The Truman Show created to drown Truman once he finally beat his fear and got on a boat. TOO MANY references to the movie; and it's EXACTLY how people are feeling everywhere. Even The8 said he's felt this way many times, and his only salvation--which is everyone's--was to find himself, which he does through meditation. So overall I think the video is beautiful...Seventeen letting CARATs know THEY UNDERSTAND what they're feeling...especially those in China and other tightly controlled countries...and that the way to overcome is to return to and find yourself. Don't quit, don't let the numbness (apathy) set it, don't hide your feelings by just laughing it off, don't fear your past self embarrassing you now. FIND YOURSELF. FIGHT For Your Life (the billboards behind Jun read "Nothing Will Make You Happy", "Waves of Fear Coming To You" and "Avoid Challenges/Stay Safe"...the messages of the world and the ones we must ignore). And CARATs...Seventeen understands what you're going through and feeling, too! One more thing I found significant is that as Dino is looking up at the night sky, the Big Dipper constellation changes into the Southern Cross...

The entire FML music video is actually based on The Truman Show. There are scenes that are direct references to it, like the artificial light that fell on Mingyu's car from the sky similar to what happened to Truman's car, the pin that dropped by Joshua's feet parallel to the scene with Lauren in the movie, the hidden camera that DK discovered was in his house as well as all the camera drones flying outside his window filming him secretly, the astronaut on Hoshi's mirror similar to what Truman drew, the fact that there was only one spot when it rained next to Wonwoo because the rain was fake, the fact that Dino realized that the stars in the sky are all artificial lights, S.Coups turning off the power because the entire world is artificial, the billboards surrounding Jun instilling fear in him so he won't escape, Woozi's car suddenly not working when he tried to escape similar to how Truman's boat suddenly died, Vernon and Seungkwan realizing everyone were "actors" preventing them from escaping the artificial world, and of course the scene with Jeonghan and them all finally escaping in a boat in the end just like Truman did. The preview in the beginning and the credits in the end were deliberately made to make it seem like a movie, its own meta just like The Truman Show. And when you think about it, it's even more apt in their case precisely because this IS already their life in a way: their life constantly on camera, constantly being watched. Them declaring through this song that they can seize the narrative now is powerful especially for them who live their lives as idols constantly in the public eye. This is them saying: We're taking the reins of our career and our life now, and we'll do it together as 13.

SEB, listen. We do find true happiness, just remember it’s a moment. People thinking it’s a state makes it easy to get depressed. That’s why “appreciate the moment” is way more powerful then a lot of people realize. Fyi thank you for drowning time when I need it♥️

Disassociation is a coping mechanism - it's not a way to thrive, but it's a way that people get through things at times. Eventually processing has to happen to heal (like you were saying at the end about not being able to run away from the feelings etc.) but I don't think you or anyone so feel wrong that they have to disassociate at times to get through painful/traumatic experiences - it's a natural human response. And like even feeling glad it can happen sometimes so you can get through things and appreciating coping stuff that helps you.

I really liked the video and the lyrics. And MV reminds me of Truman Show~ Tho I do agree Happiness ain't a destination but more like a short feeling among many feelings. Its sad when happiness is the least or almost none among the feelings we feeling :(
