Severance focuses on Mark Scout (Adam Scott), a widower who processes his grief by working for a shadowy company called Lumon. He's part of a team that's undergone "Severance," a controversial procedure that separates a person's work life and personal life with the flip of a brain-implanted switch. Mark Scout's "innie" is Mark S., the Macrodata Refinement division's generally chipper manager, who slowly becomes radicalized by the idea of escaping Lumon for the "outie" world. What does Lumon really want to use Severance for? Why are Mark and his colleagues typing numbers into computers all day, every day? And why are there so many goats? Just to clarify on my interpretation of the seals... the innies are dressed as the imagery of seals dark brown/black exterior, milchick and huang are in white, the seals natural predator, polar bears. The dead seal represents an omen for the innies due to that symbolism with the lumon ecosystem hierarchy of a higher power eating a more innocent creature due to power dynamics.

Is it worth mentioning that based on a lot of folks expecting this weeks’ episode to start with Mark on the table… lest we remind everyone- this was the start of an interview with Mark S by Reghabi, and not (at least to me) the start of a flashback episode. So, I was not confused by the start of this episode nor surprised by the “tent flash” by Mark S in terms of story continuity. Brilliant episode, loved your podcast/video the next morning! Thanks for all you do!!

Those marshmallows will smell like burnt sugar after a short time. i imagined the whole camping ground smelling like burnt dissapointment. Personally, as an innie, i would be sad because i imagine that was their only opportunity to eat roasted marshmallows in their whole life.

I think making fun of the story is because as an outie she doesn’t fully grasp how much the innies are believing the information lumen has fed to them. It’s an eye opener to her of how brainwashed the innies are. To her she’s like “come on you guys no way you’re believing this silly story” and an innie wouldn’t be so quick to not believe something they’ve know their whole life.

The start up Severance Pod calls them Shadows. and the credits on IMDB has the credited as 'Shadow Dylan/Mark/Helly'. Does have a Shadow Irving, but don't recall seeing him

The shadow irving wasn’t shown pointing the way, but he was shown when all 4 were together looking at them from above the waterfall.

I would love if Ricken wrote Appendix IV, but I think he's way too neurotic to be able to write an entire book so quickly. This is a man who couldn't decide where the best spot was to leave his book for Mark! 🤣

How did they get the outies into the forest? They had to be there to be transitioned into their innies, right?

That’s how I understood it. I imagine Milchick asked the outies if they would like to let their innies have a team building experience over a weekend, and probably guilted them too. Then they had each one walk into the forest (staggering them just like with the elevators) and woke them up.

I just started watching live with Season 2. Has there been much discussion about the creators' decision to call the procedure/TV show "Severance"? That term has a very specific meaning in the corporate/work world - severance pay. I can't really figure out what the connection would be in this theory, but it feels like they could've called the procedure a number of different things, but they chose that. And now that Irving has been fired, does he get "severance?"
