DHL it's worth mentioning that the strike happened after rotation. By that time they were past V1 speed and committed to the takeoff, regardless of what happens at that point. Even if the strike cause a full on engine failure, the pilots wouldn't have rejected.

@@arielkravchinski2616 if they had a dual engine failure, that would fall under "unable to fly" and they would reject the takeoff at any speed, even after V1. It is very dangerous, and could lead to a runway overrun, but they wouldn't really have any choice

You'd pay to sit in a cramped space for 30 minutes, roll out to the runway for 15 minutes, start to take off only to have it rejected, take 15 minutes to roll back, and 30 minutes to get out of the airplane? I have a feeling that won't be a very popular ride.

I have been following you now for quite a few years, I am fascinated by the whole concept of a 60 tonne lump of metal being projected through the skies without falling to the ground! I should also mention that I have a very serious fear of flying. And I mean a SERIOUS FEAR of flying to the point that I would rather stay at home than get on a plane to go on holiday. I have flown several times within Europe and to North Africa and there has not been one single flight that I have enjoyed due to my phobia. But by watching, studying and learning from your channel I am hoping to overcome my phobia by learning how planes fly and stay in the sky, how well the pilots are trained and all the fail safe systems that are in place to minimize the risk of a catastrophic failing of the aircraft and its computerised brain! Keep up the good work!

I was in a 747, and about 10 seconds after takeoff, there was a huge bang, followed by (1) flames coming out of the engine, and (2) the plane very palpably _dropping_ ...the pilot recovered a few seconds later, I guess by increasing the thrust on the other engines. Following that was maybe 5 minutes of complete silence, with the flight attendants still in their jump-seats, no announcements, no passenger conversation.... just silence. Finally the pilot made a brief announcement saying basically “we have a problem with an engine, we will spend some time dumping fuel into the ocean, and will return to the airport... don't worry, but please stay in your seats.” After what seemed like an eternity-still in complete silence-we landed, and the passengers erupted in cheers. When we got into the dark and mostly closed terminal (it was night), we were greeted by news cameras (!), and ended up just sleeping in the terminal until they could arrange another flight the next morning.... It was a terrifying experience, and the worst thing were those long silences, when something was very clearly wrong, and the normal reassurances from the pilots or flight attendants were conspicuously absent (the flight attendants seemed as in the dark as the passengers)...

Thanks for the video, it reminded me of experiencing a rejected takeoff as a passenger in an Embraer regional jet about 15 years ago. In this case it was caused by a large flock of birds apparently being startled then taking off and flying in front of the plane when they heard the engines rev up. The key things I recall about the incident were bracing during the deceleration, and the pilots voice being a bit shaky when he came on the intercom about a minute later telling us what had happened.

The one rejected take off I experienced was on a DC-10 on Continental from Honolulu to Newark. The aircraft was clearly not accelerating normally and halfway down the runway they rejected and taxied to the maintenance hanger where the #3 cowling was opened for about 15 minutes and we were on our way. I wasn't too sure about being confident enough to go across the ocean, neither were those around me. I had to remain silent as a non revenue passenger, but had it happened today, social media would have forced a plane change.

Sometimes passengers do overreact like mad, there probably wasn't much to worry indeed if it could be solved in 15 min, tho I do wonder how many would indeed do that nowadays, perform maintenance with passengers inside and then go (as I understood your story, if I did correctly), frankly I would have loved to see it as I like this kind of stuff but I can imagine many people wouldn't appreciate 15 minutes of avgeek pleasing.
@hewhohasnoidentity4377

@@Kalvinjj The initial takeoff roll appeared to reach a point that it wouldn't accelerate further before they rejected. The second attempt was obvious from the start that the problem was fixed. I'm sure there are plenty of examples of decisions being made due to passenger perception now. Not necessarily the go no-go decision, but the do we try again or change planes. Even some of the returns for a temporary surge seem to be for perception rather than safety.

Hi, Kratos! I think it may have been my fault. When another viewer mentioned it some time ago, I made a supposedly humorous Comment about the missing adverbial '-ly'. Whoops. How come modern aircraft don’t have a CCTV system that shows the general exterior of the aircraft and the individual cabins. But most importantly critical components like engines, flaps, ailerons, elevators, etc. both the cockpit and flight attendant areas could have access to the full resolution feed, and a compressed resolution could be streamed to the black box. Pretty much every new non-economy car have discrete CCTV cameras now.

There are a couple models of commercial aircraft that have a camera in the vertical stabalizer, but between the added expense, weight and an unfortunate aircraft incident with a DC-10, they're not very popular.

I know how it feels from the passengers seat. I was leaving Nairobi with British Airways (747) a long time ago, sitting on the upper floor facing one of the stewards ... At the time when I was preparing for the take off (lift) ... I do fly quite often so I think I have a feeling of what speed (how it feels from the passengers seat) they normally get airborne ... But this time suddenly the whole aircraft started to shake violently, and I really felt why a seat belt is needed. It stopped me from falling of the seat. The funny thing is that I was looking at the stewardess at that moment and saw panik in her face for a fraction of a second. Then she smiled at all of us, while she was shaking and all of us where shaking and the cabin overhead baggage's doors opened, some carry on luggage fell down (A GOOD REASON TO STAY WITHIN THE WEIGHT LIMIT!!! I do not want any one to have 20kg bag on the neck ...) ... After some minutes (seconds?) the plane stopped. It was night and raining outside ... so we could not se anything .... But now the captain informed us that there was an indication from one engine about engine failure ... So we returned to the gate, and after 2-3 hours of checking the engine it was time to leave Kenya, and we left without any more problems ... but maybe a missed connection flight at Heathrow.

Exactly. You want time to assess and make a decision. If you're going slowly enough to stop, then do that. At a certain point, "stop" becomes just another word for "crash" and that's when you keep going. (Unless you expect to crash anyway. That's why Petter said if you think the plane won't fly, hit the brakes.)

Just looking at the video at the beginning... One had passengers and was still on the ground - rejecting the takeoff because of weight, passengers, and may not have had enough lift with 1 engine at max weight. Second is a DHL plane, which just has a crew and mail / packages. Probably a lot lighter, but they were already airborne when the strike happened. They didn't have loss of thrust or much loss and were able to safely climb.

The borescope vid clearly shows compressor blade damage (near the tip.. About 1/8 in square.) Gonna have to be changed out with a blade of the same moment*weight and engine theoroghly checked out. Military planes used in CAS (e.g. A-10 Wart Hog) suffer damage like that fairly often, requiring continued opn or return to base, depending on circumstances.

When discussing signs of vibration, is this in reference to the actual feel of the engine / airplane? Or are their vibration monitors the pilots can view? And if not, are there vibration readings that the flight data recorder records, or is visible from remote locations, such as some airline or mfr. representative (engineering)?

A transient compressor stack rotating symmetric stall is generally not something that is of any significant concern unless it’s in a resonant frequency mode of constructively interfering harmonic vibration... these high bypass turbofans are running right at their adiabatic efficiency limit and some small transient change in delta-P can cause a stall... a bi-axial surge is another animal altogether, the etiology is the same but a surged compressor will have complete momentary loss of thrust (and internal shock front rebounds due to colliding pressure fronts), generally elevated EGT and a momentary increase in N2 rpm... these are usually accompanied by a large bang and the ignited rich exhaust exiting the nozzle... Like anything though, the potential for damage is entirely subject to the severity of the surge and whether or not it’s transient or continuous. I will say, as far as ingestion of birds... just use a little common sense. A sparrow isn’t likely going to have the mass to completely shred the titanium fan or FeNiCr(Inconel/HastalloyX) compressor stack... but a Canadian goose? That’s why bird ingestion and strikes over where I am in NY (JFK) tend to cause a bit more damage statistically... We have a serious issue with these flocking Canadian geese, and if you’re familiar with these Avians, you know how enormous they can be. 25 lbs of bird mass head on into a turbofan at 130kt...😣

Well, they *are* tested by throwing chicken carcasses in while running, so they must expect it to sometimes go thru the core. Mainly, the test is to insure that if/when one fails *badly*, the debris is contained instead of punching holes thru the cabin & passengers. Search here on YT for 'bird engine test', and you'll find some good videos.
