Love your videos. You sure have patience with these machines and don't doubt your knowledge. You certainly have the how to down. Hope to check back on how this job progress. I don't have the cash flow like I use to since hart surgery but I would rather get as much done my self. Knowing a good machine shop with skilled people also helps. Good luck. My buddy says you can accomplish anything it just takes time money and patience👍

I went into this one like it was my “forever” truck and spent money I should not have, thinking I could make it bulletproof. If I do another one of these I plan to do it on a shoestring.

Go with a set of 6.7 steel pistons good for 2000hp
@barntech22913 жыл бұрын
I bought the International Maxx Force 7 pistons from DDPM. They have a smaller lip on the fuel bowl. I’ve got the short block almost ready. Waiting on ARP main studs to arrive in the mail before I button it up. Hope to have a new video ready soon!

It was definitely worst case scenario. I went into it expecting a blown motor though. Now I see that is a really common failure for the 6.4 Powerstroke.

Change the injector on cylinder #7 & #8. I used to own one of these disasters and I am also a Ford diesel tech. The injectors on the 2 back cylinders spray fuel during the exhaust stroke during regeneration and can burn the pistons. My 6.4l burned up the piston on #8. Then the injector stuck on cylinder #7 and the engine hydrolocked and bent the rod and cracked #7 piston. Then I had many issues with the exhaust temp sensors failing and sweating the engine. Needless to say I sold that truck.

I tried to “bulletproof” mine. I replaced the parts that usually fail and it broke somewhere else. New video coming soon.

Hey barntech, I have 6.4 with a blown head gasket. Thinking of repairing it myself. Where did you get you parts kits ect? What do recommend replacing since I'm going that deep into it. The truck runs great has 200 000 on it but is getting overpressurized coolant system. Thanks for your videos and help.

I got my kit from Dynamic Diesel. I recommend you check the EGR coolers before you buy anything else though.

If you do have to rebuild it, here are some parts I used: Mahle gaskets, bearings, lifters, and MaxxForce pistons, ARP head studs, ARP main studs, OEM rocker arms, aftermarket heads (both of mine were cracked so I got new castings from the machine shop).

Yep….I wanted a 6.4 so badly but ended up with a 6.0….. The 6.4 is an absolute beast of an engine but everything on it is x2 the price in comparison to the 6.0 I did the standard repairs myself on my 6.0 it’s a good truck I can’t complain it just always has wondering what’s gonna happen next..?

I’m happy with my 6.4 so far. I am a year into it and I’ve still got plenty to fix though.

My front piston was cracked exactly same way I put new ceramic coated ones in it them 6.4s dump all that raw fuel in that hot cylinder to burn out that filter what a genius that engineer was fogging those skeeters do a delete ASAP ON THEM strip all that other garbage off and delete it I put mine back 2 stock settings and run lucus fuel additive every fuel up runs perfectly
@barntech22912 жыл бұрын
Yes, most of the reliability issues of the 6.4 seem to be caused by the emissions systems (DPF, EGR, etc). Unfortunately, I am not aware of a legal way to delete them. EPA put most of the companies that make delete tuners out of business. I have even heard of some states (eg New Jersey) going after individual truck owners. Not sure what options are left for those of us who want our trucks to last more than 150k without incurring massive fines. Any ideas?
@slickdoglong36692 жыл бұрын
@@barntech2291 mine doesn't even hardly smoke at stock settings I put H&S PROGRAMER ON IT AND DELETED EVERYTHING then it cracked piston rebuilt then it would fall on its face then really go and be good then all over again this young mechanic researched it put it back to stock settings has lots of power and everything has been perfect since 2015 it still runs perfect but seems like maybe exaust leak I towed trailer today and only screams when u fuel it on pull but perfect outside of that thought might be something in valve train but sounds great idling and fun great I dush almost all fuel with Lucas for injection lubrication thanks diesel doctor 👍

Can I ask you what you paid for it I’m considering buying one from a guy a 2008 Ford F-350 lariat is has a 6.4 diesel engine piston melted on it so I know it needs a rebuild has 260.000km on it body-in good shape. I just want an idea what I should look at paying for it. Thank you for you advice
@barntech22912 жыл бұрын
I have seen several of these. Typical price seems to be $5000-$7500 depending on condition. The repairs may cost significantly more. If you watch some of my other videos you will see this was only the beginning.
