Hi there, and please forgive me if I embarrassed you, because that wasn't my intention. I wanted to provide a better definition to the word (derecho). I'd been watching the Weather Channel, and they were covering some of the historic weather events of the past 20 years, and they mentioned the 2012 derecho.

Nice. I bet the temperature really came down once the winds began. The storm came through at midnight here in Minneapolis. Wind damage mostly in the west central part of the state, but it was a bit breezy. The most notable of the storm was the intense lightning. I heard reports that 1,000 strikes of lightning in a hour was reported in the Twin Cities - it was like a strobe light - it went on for about an hour...

Either that was quite a flood, or you've got a rain barrell. (I'm only speculating, because I'm totally blind, and I love listening to videos like this one! Is that a covered porch?

That was NOT a derecho, what you had there sir was a mild storm, a derecho usually packs winds over 70mph up to 105mph, you had a summer afternoon storm.....wow so glad you managed to survive !!!!!
@mirishitaunofficial5 жыл бұрын
IKR. This was probably a strong rotation.

I remember when I was in a derecho the sky was pitch black and the wind was so strong it was moving our pick up sideways many big trees were rip down and many houses suffered broken windows and roof damage one garage room was completely blown away expect for the metal Skeleton
@heatherstub4 жыл бұрын
@@凛さづき Actually, the word "derecho" is Spanish for straight. So, the actual definition is a line of severe thunderstorms with straight-line winds that blow at 58 miles per hour or more. In many cases, the storms have winds that blow at hurricane speeds which are 74 miles per hour or more, but for a line of storms with winds traveling 58 mph or more. You may recall the storms that hit the U.S. in 2012 and traveled well over 700 miles and left a long and wide path of destruction throughout the Midwest and affected people from Iowa to Indiana and from Georgia to Washington, D.C. and Maryland. Some people were killed, and one lady was hit by 91 miles per hour winds while she drove her motorcycle.

@@RamonHernandez-jv2hw Indeed, they do. If wet and on pavement, they pose a slip and fall hazard.
Not impressed. The St. Louis heatwave derecho on July 19, 2006 knocked out power to 1.2 million people for 5-10 days, killed 6 people, had wind gusts of 100mph, and spawned several tornados. It started in South Dakota, cut across Iowa, turned south, cut through Illinois, turned southwest, hit the metro St. Louis area dead on, and then ripped through Missouri before dying out. I was at the ball game when it happened.

That was like a whimpy derecho compared to what hit Iowa last week. The difference between a firecracker and an atomic bomb.
@rfi-cryptolab42514 жыл бұрын
@@johnosborne7708 We had a derecho in the late 90's with gusts approaching 130mph. It took down several high tension pylons and a lot of roofs. Luckily it occurred early in the morning on a weekend so no one was really outside or driving. Winds by me were thankfully lower with a recorded gust to 86mph. Still dropped several trees and ripped my service lines off my house. Highest wind I've ever experienced.
