Nice video Jeanne, Dave P. Ace Sailmakers East Lyme Ct

Well done, looks very sturdy! And interesting to hear that spinnaker cloth doesn't hold. Not surprising but good to have it confirmed.

Excellent video Jeanne. Great JSD explanation. Hope you don't have to use it this time as you cross the Pacific. 60kt winds at sea...very scary 😬

Armchair sailor here, the downside of having the chain at the top of the bay is the heavy weight being so high up out of the water line.
@philgray344310 ай бұрын
It is countered by the 7 tonnes of weight below the waterline. She is an incredibly experienced sailor.

Jeanne, Thank you for this informative video. As one who has never deployed a JSD, please know my question comes from a place of ignorance. By placing the retrieval line at the junction of where the bridle connects to the line of the JSD, I a puzzled as to how that is effective in retrieving the JSD. My thoughts are that I would connect the retrieval line near the connection point of the chain. While this would make the retrieval line quite long, it would seem to collapse the cones as one pulls the retrieval line since they would be pulled in with the closed end first. By having the retrieval line near the bridal, it would seem that the cones would be pulled open end first, therefore with more drag. Please help me understand what I must be missing.

I have thought along the same lines as you. I have hove too twice in my life in gales, once with no para anchor and once with. I have not used this line drogue. I think you have to bring it in the yard way because a line running all the way to the chain would at some point twist around the drogue collapsing the small drogues making it less effective. That is my thinking.

Very useful set up, thank you! Do you attach the drogue only to the stern cleats? Or do you also use other cleats, considering the loads involved?
@jeannesailingsolo Жыл бұрын
Check my video again - I never use any cleats..

Great video. Did you make that bag? Ian participating in golden globe race had the jsd catch his hydrovane and break it.

Same problem as I had - need floaty stiffening near boat to prevent that from happening
@amandalillet1056 Жыл бұрын
I’ll be installing a similar setup and I’m curious about the floaty stiffening as well. If you have a chance to show how that will work, Jeanne, I’m sure many of us would love to see it! Thanks also for the note on UV protection for the bridle. How many times have you deployed your drogue?
@jeannesailingsolo Жыл бұрын
@@amandalillet1056 I'm thinking of using the split pipe insulation - it seems very floaty and would be easy to instal and push out along the bridle arms to keep them well astern. Deployed it several times - lost count!

Never deploy any drogue weight first (power mode). Always bridle first to flake out safely.
@jeannesailingsolo10 ай бұрын
Totally disagree - weight first is the logical and best way to deploy the drogue . Have never had a problem doing that in all the times I have deployed my JSD that way!

We need to make a clear distinction between a drogue (or sea anchor), as traditionally using a single large cone of some type, and a JSD (that is, a Jordan series drogue)- totally different items!

Chris that is an interesting point. I know it is wrong but thanks for bringing it up. The thing is, these things get dangerous when they have a number of cones out. The forces generated are enormous and that chain with 2 tonnes of force pulling it into the water would make it a lethal weapon. I know that just getting a JSD back on board can be very difficult. Your comment at least makes me stop and think.

@@philgray3443 'lethal weapon'?? How so?? I've had no major problem retrieving my JSD ....

This is a debrief, not an argument. Calm thoughts required. My point is on the table!
