Severity of producing hemp - Ise hemp (Minamiise Town, Mie Prefecture)

Since ancient times, hemp has been used in Shinto rituals as a purifier of impurities and has been widely used in traditional culture and performing arts. Through the production of fine hemp, Ise hemp promotes the traditional value of hemp and aims to provide a stable supply in Japan.
Hemp, which has been cultivated nationwide as an industry that has supported people's lives since the Jomon period in Japan, is a species that cannot be used as a drug, but domestic production is shrinking due to strict regulations. Currently, domestic production is limited to several houses in Tochigi prefecture and Ise hemp, and it is said that there are many cases where hemp used for Shinto rituals is made overseas.
Cultivation license is judged by prefecture. In Mie prefecture, the purpose of cultivation is limited only when it is used for rituals in the prefecture, and the cost of crime prevention measures is excessive. Co-representative Matsumoto says it is difficult to maintain a business on this scale.
Mr. Matsumoto is concerned that "the traditional value is underestimated" due to the strict regulations of Mie Prefecture, and warns that "the hemp tradition will not be connected as it is". Mr. Tanigawara, co-representative of Ise hemp, always gives priority to the fermented state of hemp, from sowing seeds in the field to peeling and making high-quality hemp. He says that working with nature will not produce good results unless he has sharpened his five senses and earnestly competes, and that if he does not convey to the next generation a sense that cannot be acquired overnight, the culture will be lost. Now that the number of producers is decreasing year by year, the development of Ise hemp's efforts is desired.
