Dr. James Meschia, a Professor of Neurology at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL, shares results of his study appearing in the March 2019 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, which using a large patient registry database, showed that the incidental findings of white matter hyperintensities are not benign and do lead to increased mortality risks. The good news is that as much as 80% of stroke risk factors are amenable to behavioral changes through diet, exercise, and smoking cessation, to halt the progression of further development of white matter hyperintensities in the brain.
