SUPERB VIDEO! when I was in the forces - on my days off my best mate 'Zed' (Nick Miller) and I travelled up from Oxford by train - we were volunteers. This was back in the early 80's. We are boith engineers. At night we would sleep in the 'camping coach' or they would pull in some coaching stock and we sleft in sleeping bags! We started at the bottom disposing locos and getting up at 5am to get steam up! (AFTER 10 YEARS we were given shovels LOL) I used to LOVE going down the pit in the winter under a hot engine IT WAS WARM! Then 'dropping the box' and raking out the fires at night. Then in the morning cleaning duties cotton waste and oil, emptying the smoke box! I have a photo my mate took of me looking line a coal miner WHITE teeh and eyes but black face. During running we had our 'own' guards van where we lit the pot boiler stove and hid from the rain in between trains! THE BEST PART was firing and BREAKFAST cooked on the shovel once she started to cook up! CANT BEAT the taste and smell of baon and eggs and a tinny of tea. (Im vegetarian now) but still miss those days! SVR FOREVER. Not been back in 40 years as I went to America. OH I nearly forgot in the station bar at night the SPECIAL was 'Marges pickeld onions' (I think ) with a pork pie SPICY!!!!🥵 When I moved away from Oxford I worked on other lines 'Swindon and & Cricklade' and the Bluebell.
