I'm making my second Merchant and Mills Sanda car coat at the moment :D My advice with coats is that no matter if you have a walking foot or not, fast basting the seams is worth every single extra second you spend doing it. The issue with clips and pins is that they are always catching and slightly shifting the fabric, with basting thread you can just sling the fabric though the machine never having to stop and start ,and you won't have to seam rip anything neither.

Great tip! Thank you!

I completely agree! Any time I am sewing anything bulky or complicated I either use the longest stitch possible for the first seam, or hand baste as appropriate. Especially when using thick fabrics where the stitches bury deep it can just make you want to cry or toss the project sometimes. 😸

Thank you for this Wonderful series! In the sixties this dress and matching coat was called an Ensemble. They were Beautiful then and I'm glad to see them back!

Of course it was. Everything was so refined back then! I'm bring the word "ensemble" back! It's too good!

I loved them too, I was just a child, but my mom made one dress with matching duster or dress jacket. I considered it terribly elegant! She was a very, very good seamstress, she shopped a dead stock fabric store and got scraps from Levi’s where she occasionally worked, and her clothes looked very expensive even though we were pretty poor. And she made the best outfits for me and my sister. .

Well I WAS going to make the Vogue V1741 jumpsuit in suede-backed satin but after seeing the cocktail dress and car coat, I am making them now. I have both patterns. Def shortening the hem and changing the collar too.

No way! I am just about to get into vintage vogue 9939 from 1960 and it’s almost exactly like this with the big funnel neck collar. I was thinking about trying to turn it into a notch collar though because it seems more wearable. This is almost changing my mind tho! What a cute look

To throw another one on your list - Lindsey just did a video on the Butterick fall collection, on there is the vintage reprint coat B7020 which I'm desperate to make up this winter.

V9939 is so cute, but yah, I agree, about wanting to switch out the collar for more of a statement on the front. The B7020 Box coat is so good, too! So many great vintage coat options!

@@66kandFrendsoh I like that one too!!❤

I would consider making two maybe? One that is a statement piece, go with a unique fabric. Then one in a more neutral and adjust the collar?
