Excellent video! One question. Your finished product looks like you used binding although it was coverstitched only. Is attaching binding necassary when coverstitching necklines and armholes?

Good question! Structurally, the cover-stitch has you well...covered. 😉 That left needle that is going along your raw edge will finish that edge for you. But sometimes people still prefer to add a binding to cover the underside of the cover-stitch. You'll see this more in high-end garment construction. Personally, as someone who doesn't use the cover-stitch all that regularly, I sometimes cut my seam allowance a little bigger than needed so when I fold the seam over, that left needle will be guaranteed to cover my raw edge, but then I go in with my scissors and cut right up next to that left needle thread. - Betsy F.

What is the benefit of using the fusable lightweight webbing vs wash away. What brand did you use?

I think the lightweight fusible web does a slightly better job of stabilizing before stitching (you can finger press everything smooth before fusing) whereas some people tend to stretch the hem or neckline when they apply a washable glue stick. Surprisingly, the fusible web doesn't seem to inhibit the ability to stretch long term and even seems to eventually fade out of the garment. But really, you can use either one! So glad the tips are helpful!

What tension settings do you prefer when using knits

When coverstitching knits, I start with the tension settings set by my serger (or are written in my serger's manual if it is not an automatic tensioning serger). I stitch a test sample, and examine it. Usually it is fine, but sometimes I will notice a bit of "tunneling" where the fabric between the rows of stitching is a bit raised (like a pintuck). If that is happening, I loosen the needle thread tensions slightly and re-examine. It usually solves the problem. I recommend to ALWAYS do a test stitch on scraps first when serging. No matter what the stitch.

@@katrinawalker3821 This is great advise again. I will follow your advice when hemming my curved hem this week. Also, I will check my needle tension as well. I do notice at times that issue which different kinds of knits. I so appreciate your time & help. Keep doing the great coverstitch videos ;) I just LOVEmy coverstitch machine. The top I'm wearing is called the #426 Shirred Top and Princess Wrap, by Christine Jonson Patterns. www.cjpatterns.com/all-patterns/shirred-top-princess-wrap-426 The pattern includes the instructions for sewing/serging it together. I chose to trim the neckline with a slightly stretchy petersham ribbon from The Sewing Place: thesewingplace.com/stretch-petersham-ribbons/ Otherwise, it's constructed exactly as indicated in the pattern.
