Thanks for the free pattern and video. I was enlarging a store bought beanie (loved the fabric) and it was a brain teaser to add a few inches to the stretchy width and then follow your video to sew it back together. A fun experience overall. And now it fits! It is a leap of faith that it will sew all the way around. Then remembering it is the seam perpendicular which has the opening to turn it and stitch that 2" opening shut. But that final twist with pulling the long sewn edge over your head and having the top twist shut is hilarious. Like magic. Now I can make them from scratch. YAY.

woot! I did it! I was super confused by the tube part....but I kept futzing with it because I knew I'd followed the directions. For people finding the tube part - find the stitch line that goes around the head hold the piece by that and shake the fabric out a bit and then it looks right and makes sense.

Yes, it is a bit confusing, so thanks for clarifying that for others - I have a brief description in the comments below the video, but if it still confusing for anyone - just join my Facebook closed group - there is video in there that shows more details on this - or else message me and I can link you to the video: facebook.com/groups/trishnewberydesign

Are you open to suggestions? Just pick a ziz-zag and make it narrower (less side-to-side movement) and just do it - or if you have a lightning bolt that's probably the best one - the thing is if you don't start you'll end up overthinking it. Everyone started somewhere and you might be surprised at how good it turns out :)

Hi Trish, thanks for this video, I’ve tried making one of these, I don’t know where I’m going wrong, but mine keeps making a twisted tube!? I’ve unpicked it twice and tried again, any ideas what I might be doing wrong?
@TrishNewberyDesign
@TrishNewberyDesign 4 жыл бұрын
Oh no - are you on FB? - if you search my group there is some more details in there that could help. I think you are doing it right, you just need to put the tube over a head and pull down to pull in the twist - I hope that makes sense, then you can turn up the edge if you want. It definitely helps to have a head to pull it over. facebook.com/TrishNewberyDesign

Is there a way to make this using 2 different prints to make it reversible?
@TrishNewberyDesign
@TrishNewberyDesign 3 жыл бұрын
No - mainly because of the seam under the fold up and the twist - it moves and if it was reversible it could risk never looking "right.

My sewing machine is a really old Singer Featherweight. I love it, but it only has straight stitch, no zigzag. Is there any way I can sew a knit like this, or should I just borrow somebody else's machine?
@TrishNewberyDesign
@TrishNewberyDesign 4 жыл бұрын
You really need a stretch stitch - yes you will need to borrow someones machine. If you use a straight stitch and put too much pressure on the seams when you pull it on, the threads will break (the seams will split) and you will be disappointed. Good luck
@lrosewalker
@lrosewalker 3 жыл бұрын
@@TrishNewberyDesign When using a straight stitch only machine, if you slightly stretch the fabric as you sew (a slight tug behind and in front of the needle) , you will build stretch into the straight stitched seam. When the finished seam stretches the stitches won't pop.

Hi! Can this be made with scuba or does it require four way stretch?
@TrishNewberyDesign
@TrishNewberyDesign 4 жыл бұрын
4 way stretch would be best - most Scuba wouldn't have enough stretch to make it comfortable to wear

Trish, I can follow you up through minute 4 where you say " just continue sewing all the way around until you're stitching on top of your previous stitch". I cannot for the life of me figure out what you are sewing to what. Can anyone offer any help, explanation, or advice? I am not on facebook so I cannot join your group. Thanks

When you sew layers 1 and 4 together, as you sew around, you will end up right back at your starting sewing point of layers 1&4. You sew in a circle. I just mean overlap your start point, don’t leave agap

Gosh I'm sorry, I don't know how else to explain it - you really just need to sew one - then it just falls into place and makes sense - it loops around (sort of) like an infinity twist

Yes - as you pull it down on your head the opening closes - the bonus is you can pull a pony tail through the top. If you prefer it permanently closed, just sew a pom pom on top with a few stitches

since the majority of beginners don't even own a serge machine it would have been really nice if you had done your demo on a regular machine that had zigzag. and s a beginner this was not easy to understand and I needed better visuals.
