Great idea! Thinking I will glue a single layer of material on the inside, also pinked, to cover stitches. Draw the string again making it look like the backside of the ball...

Yes…. When I make Fabric Christmas cards….. I always glue a blank page on the inside…..I don’t know why but I just don’t like seeing the wrong side of stitching. I do the same thing in my journals. However, in journals it does add bulk to the pages.

What a lovely idea. Came up in my feed after xmas so can get started early for the next one :-) A few years back, I received a card with a free motion xmas tree on it. It had been ironed onto thick backing fabric first, sewn and then glued to the card. This might be an easier option than stitching through card. Tfs

Lots of fun! Quite neat on the other side too; I'd probably have to glue/paste some kind of "cover up" picture or decoration to hide my messy sewing on the backside of the bauble 🙂 (Or even something to cover the entire inside of the front section?) It could still be a blank piece of paper, so a short letter can be included...maybe with decorated sewing around the edges to continue the theme (my sewing machine has decorative stitches I've never even tried out yet). This project has given me lots of ideas! Thank you so much.

@bluebellhillcrafts
@bluebellhillcrafts Жыл бұрын
SO pleased you enjoyed the video and I hope your friends will enjoy the tags or even have a go themselves! I find that free motion stitching in straight lines is much easier to start with as the line of stitching is easier to control. Going in the round is definitely trickier.. I also practice first to get a feel for it again as it's something that you need to keep at it really, it's just so different from regular sewing. Free motion stitching opens up so many other areas of creative design that it's definite worth persevering with and I'll definitely delve into it more in the new year.. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment & happy sewing! Mira 🙋‍♀️😊

That’s fabulous!! So pleased to hear you’re feeling encouraged! I think this ‘sketched’ look is very forgiving and what you think might be wobbly sewing might look totally intentional to someone who’s never done this. Just own it, I’m sure it’ll be fine. I always run a few paper scraps through first to familiarise myself again, that’s definitely worth doing! And then maybe move on to some gift tags.. Most importantly- enjoy the process and relish the progress you’ll soon make!

@bluebellhillcrafts
@bluebellhillcrafts 11 ай бұрын
That's a great idea! I was a little torn between covering up the stitches and also showing 'the inner workings' of the card.. It would definitely look tidier as a card for someone who wouldn't be particularly interested in that part of it. Just an additional thought for anyone in the UK would be that the card plus envelope cannot be thicker than 5mm for them to still be sent as a 'letter'. The cost for a 'large letter' for anything thicker does unfortunately jump quite a bit. Not sure whether another layer might push the card over the threshold. Definitely worth trying it out, though! Thanks so much for your comment! 😍🙋‍♀️

I don't know if you were commenting independently or saw my previous comment that I'm planning to add some gold foil detail to the cards, but that it was unfortunately too dark a day today to do any filming. I love this idea and it is absolutely do-able. I would worry about punching through the cardstock but I guess you could glue the perferated circle onto another card base.
@bluebellhillcrafts
@bluebellhillcrafts 11 ай бұрын
Yes, I know what you mean.. I was quite conscious of not sewing over the same lines too much so that there would be too many perforations for the card stock to hold. Someone suggested glueing a piece of fabric over the stitches on the inside of the card to hide them and this would also help to keep things in place if some areas turn out to be weaker than others with an accumulation of stitches. If all fails, you can always save the motif and stick it onto a new card, as you say. No one would suspect this wasn’t intentional and I’m sure it would be just as beautiful! Have fun 😊✨

@bluebellhillcrafts
@bluebellhillcrafts 11 ай бұрын
Please don't be scared - I totally get it, but fear of trying will only stop you from experimenting and developing new skills. Don't let it 😊 - the satisfaction of managing something that wasn't easy to come by will be so much greater! Try sewing straight lines first, they are definitely easier than going in the round and do as many practice pieces as you need to get a feel for the free motion foot. When I started I found the thread was jumping around a lot and I think I was sewing too slowly. Somehow that made it more difficult to control everything. It seems counter intuitive to speed up, but it actually helped me. Perhaps watch a few more tutorials and make some notes along the way, but then jump right in. That's the only way to learn. Good luck & enjoy the process!!! 👍

Absolutely beautiful. I think I'm going to give it a go on single layers of card and then glue it onto a blank card base, will hide the stitches and if I mess up it won't waste the card blank. What do you think?
@bluebellhillcrafts
@bluebellhillcrafts Жыл бұрын
I think it's a great idea!! You could use double sided sticky tape and add it to the very edges of the stitched piece so it connects well with the blank card. The only thing to consider - if you're in the UK - is whether the finished card + envelope will still go as a 'letter' or whether it'll be a 'large letter'. I really like the idea of the stitches not showing on the inside, it's a good option to have! Have fun! 🙋‍♀️

Hello & welcome! 🙋‍♀️😊 So pleased you found me - thanks so much for subscribing! You could always have a go at making birthday or anniversary cards this way if you didn't want to wait until next year and just change the motif. For example a candle + flame or a boxy shaped gift with a ribbon drawn above in brighter fabrics.. Sewing straight lines would also be really good practice to control the free motion foot. I'm finding sewing in the round still hard as I don't do this often enough.. Too many ideas and too little time lol!

@bluebellhillcrafts
@bluebellhillcrafts Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for flagging that up - I didn't put the link in the right place, but I hope I fixed it now.. If you watch again, you'll see the link appear 22 seconds into the video at the top right corner, titled 'Too many fabric scraps?🙈'.. That link is to a tutorial on how to make a quilted bookmark for which I'm using interfacing. The first steps on how to prep fabric scraps onto interfacing and Bondaweb (the latter used for the baubles) are the same, so it's quite handy to show it for both. Differences in further steps between the two materials are irrelevant here as you use a glue stick to fix the fabric bauble to the paper card anyway and won't have to worry about more pressing & ironing. I hope that helps! Mira 🙋‍♀️😊

Now, I thought for sure you'd sew first, then glue on. That way the stitching doesn't show? Wish my pinking-shears would work, I had them sharpened but they've never worked for me. Maybe because I'm left-handed?? 🤔
@bluebellhillcrafts
@bluebellhillcrafts 11 ай бұрын
You know, I've never tried sewing on the Bondaweb without adding it to something first, usually to a base fabric if used as appliqué or card stock, as in this video. I'm not sure whether it would hold under the free motion foot without something to stabilise it. It might be too light and keep getting lifted up by the needle which wouldn't then move around the fabric as freely as intended, but definitely worth a try. Some people have suggested adding a solid circle to the inside of the card to cover the stitches which is a good idea, but in a way I kind of like the stitches showing. But if you're after a cleaner look, then covering them up would definitely be a good idea! As to the pinking shears - being left handed may well be the reason they're not working for you. I wonder if there are ones specially designed for left handed sewists.. Happy sewing and thanks so much for sharing your thoughts, much appreciated! 😊🙋‍♀️
@mas103
@mas103 8 ай бұрын
How do you make the square of stacked fabrics that you draw the circle on? Is it backed with stabilizer?
@bluebellhillcrafts
@bluebellhillcrafts 7 ай бұрын
Yes, it was stabilised with 'iron on interfacing' (as shown in my *quilted* bookmark tutorial, not the bookmark corners one). A lightweight or medium weight interfacing would be better than a heavy weight one as that would make it a bit more difficult for the needle to go through. I hope this helps! Have fun 🙋‍♀️

Beautiful. What is the needle attachment called. I’m an amateur at the sewing machine but want to try this. Thanks for sharing x

What you need is a free motion presser foot - this is the interchangeable part that attaches to the sewing machine. All brands will offer this as an accessory and there’s even some cheaper non branded ones available. It usually states what they’re compatible with. Free motion sewing is incredibly versatile and a lot of fun, but it does need a bit of practice as the needle tends to jump around a bit. So don’t get disheartened at the beginning, it’s well worth persevering with! Sewing straight lines is easier to start with than circles. I hope this helps! ✨😊🙋‍♀️

Oh and you will need to drop your feed dogs and turn the stitch length to zero as a general rule.. x

Do you use a special needle when you sew this? It looks so cut!

I always save my old machine needles when I swap to new ones for dressmaking or quilting so they have a second life sewing on paper which they are still perfectly fine for once they're no longer pristine for fabric. That means I have an assortment of all sorts of needles, but mainly for light / medium weight fabrics. The thicker the card stock I want to sew on, the thinner the needle I choose as thicker ones tend to leave bigger holes when they are 'forcing their way through' the card. I hope that helps ☺️

La máquina y el prensatelas son especiales para coser así o sólo el prensatelas?
@bluebellhillcrafts
@bluebellhillcrafts 11 ай бұрын
Sólo el prensatelas es diferente a la costura normal. Para ello necesitarás un pie de "movimiento libre". Cada marca de máquinas de coser lo tendrá disponible como accesorio. ¡Feliz costura!

Why waste so much of that beautiful fabric - which you made! - by not cutting circles close to the edges and each other?

A very valid question! On this occasion I wanted to have a section that would look best for the bauble for the purpose of this video. I do save all my scraps and have already used another part of this fabric for today's video of the remembrance candle. There's still lots left and I think I'll use the smaller sections on gift tags for Christmas. Nothing gets wasted if I can help it and I'm so pleased that you feel the same and have raised this point! 🙋‍♀️😊
