Every day’s a school day. I have been using old thread and didn’t know it could become brittle, but then I haven’t had a problem so far…
@janewardle55582 ай бұрын
Wadding to go between the layers of fabric is a lot softer and drapery, I agree with earlier comment what you have looks more like the stuff used to give bags etc structure. Love the video, other peoples charity shops always look more interesting than the local ones somehow. Congratulations on your haul🙂

Those vibrant colors of the embroidery floss could make anyone sing!! On the piece of wadding for your cushion.... You can butt the edges of wadding together and either machine or hand zig zag stitch to hold them together! In a patchwork that will be quilted you don't really even need to stitch them as the quilting will hold them all together brilliantly. There are spray fabric glues that people use too. They wash out from the fabric later. BIG congrats on your rotory cutter!!!!

The stuff you thought was wadding could be bosal which is used in bag making to make the bag stiff.
@bybeccalewis2 ай бұрын
Thank you 🙏 I will look into it.
@gillbennett97842 ай бұрын
Yes, I wondered if it was bosal too. It looks too flat and stiff to be wadding. Maybe even heavyweight iron on vilene?

A little tip with old cotton sewing thread- sometimes the brittleness can be dealt with by soaking the reel in water then letting it dry out. But I would only use it for small projects or items that won’t get used much. There is nothing worse than spending hours creating a beautiful quilt just to have it come apart because you used old thread to stitch it. Thanks for this video it has reminded me that I should have a day out in Fishguard sometime soon.

Hi Becca, Your op shop haul was amazing well done! I have been doing that recently again and found some gorgeous appletons wool which I bought for a very small amount of money. Really liked your fabric choices they are lovely. Your thread box was really good find. I recently also bought a whole box of threads DMC from a thrift store and they are beautiful (now in colour coded order lol). The wadding should be enough for a couple of cushions I think. You can hand quilt the fabric with the wadding (sandwhich it) or machine stitch it. But its a lot more fun if you handquilt and slow stitch it, but thats just my opinion. I especially loved the blue building you took us into so beautiful! That old door, gorgeous! Enjoy your quilting great that you bought the rotary cutter too much easier for you. Thanks for sharing looking forward to seeing it all come together.

Thank you Tracy 🙏. The Seaways bookstore is the shop with the green door and it's my favorite shop in Fishguard. I am super happy with the finds . I am trying to work out a way to do some hand enlistment and machine stitching. I know myself and I will never finish anything if I hand quilt everything.

A tip for fabric thrift shopping - men’s shirts especially XL and above. You get masses of fabric for very little money. Obviously it depends what pattern you’re looking for as they are often plaid but not always. Personally I wouldn’t mix curtain fabric with dress fabric because of the different thicknesses. You may be able to cut the wadding to fit the shape you need and then but the edges together and zig zag stitch them. Pin it to your patchwork with safety pins if necessary and you’re ready to quilt it. You may find a walking foot helps get it through without puckering. Great finds at the shops! Glad you escape storm damage. Look forward to seeing what you make!

Hello I'm new subscriber, just down the road from you! You got a really good haul there. Your mystery fabric, not sure what it is but it doesn't look like wadding to me. If it is wadding it's easy enough to stitch together with a large, loose herringbone stitch. I'll have to give you a heads up when I'm taking fabric to Shalom shop!

Great Video Becca...Loved the haul- I recently managed to find some vintage Liberty and Sanderson fabric for very cheap I may add! I also do a lot of machine sewing and use the wadding particularly when making little fabric bags, brooches using free motion embroidery. I do not quilt -yet but I am sure it will give substance and stability to any sewing project you have at hand. I use embroidery thread daily and I always thought that is what we call it in the UK, Floss I think is an American term for the same thing. Mind you I could be wrong!! Sweet Blessings Mand XOXO

Greetings from the Vale of Glamorgan. Am rather envious of your charity shops - much more interesting than the ones around here. That cream co,our fabric doesn’t look like quilting wadding to me - wadding is soft, almost fluffy in texture. Maybe what you have is a lining fabric?
