Pattern maker by trade here, the hem problem with circle skirts is really part of the "nature" of circle skirts, so there's probably nothing wrong in the way your drafting your patterns! Since the surface of the circle skirt is cut on different grain directions all at once (on grain, half-bias, bias), the various sections of the fabric react differently depending on where they were cut compared to the grain. As other comments suggested, the best thing to do is letting the garment rest on the dressform for at least one night and then trim the excess while still on the dressform to make it even 😊

As a quilter I LOVE a good pressed seam moment. There is just something so satisfying when all your seams are neat and tidy. I may be the only person to ever see the underside of that quilt but I love knowing how perfect they looked before they got locked away inside. Lol I absolutely loved the color palette of this dress. for circle skirts, I typically will let them hang for a while to allow the fibers to relax. once that’s done I measure up from the floor and mark the fabric to get an even hem! I love your videos so much and have been anxiously awaiting this video after seeing your posts on instagram❤

This is the answer. Since part (but not all) of the circle skirt is on the bias, it stretches out unevenly after being by cut. No matter how perfectly you draft it, you’ll still need to hang it for a few days and then trim it even before hemming.

Gorgeous work. Some advice from a quilter for next time you sew strips together. Try sewing them onto a lightweight fabric using the stitch and flip method. Cut a piece of lightweight fabric to the shape you want, make your strips, then sew onto the lightweight fabric. First strip is right side up, second strip right side down aligning with the edge of first strip, sew the strip then flip and iron. The seams will be tucked between the patchwork and the lightweight base fabric and you won’t have to overlock the seams. ❤

I've been working on a temperature quilt since the beginning of the year. I'm quite proud of it so far. Below Zero is black fabric, 1-5 F is light purple, and so on through the rainbow. And I'm doing half square triangles so I'm logging both the lowest temperature of the day and the highest. If it rains or snows, I add a special stitch down the center seam of the HST.

You could try chain piecing and strip piecing for efficiency. Patchwork is part of quilting, so a ton of quilting efficiency techniques would help you with patchwork

So pretty, love your vision & completed design. Very well done. I agree about letting the garment hang over night before hemming so it can settle from all the piecing. A littlextailoring tip: I noticed when u were trimming the seams at the cuff it's best to grade the inside seams of the bias tape. Keep the one layer longer that is closer to the public side of the garment & the shortest trim closest to the stitch line. Then it will lay flatter without a bulk at the seam line.

I always have to go over my circle hem again. Like hang it on the mannequin and mark it with my hem chalk tool that rolls around the garment and spits out chalk. And then I recut!

This look so freaking amazing!!! The amount of time that went into this garment was 100% worth it!!! Also when you were talking about how you get mentally drained when doing the design process- GIRL SAME!!! Yesterday I was working on a thrift flip and fixing up some issues I had- but man it took it the WHOLE DAY. What a beautiful patchwork! ❤ true artistry 😍 Next time you're gonna cut through patchwork, so you don't have to worry about the seams opening: you can run a stitch on top of your marker lines, and then cut next to that so you know your hard work is protected as you move the piece around 😊

I love that dress!! It's so joyful! you can get hem markers (they puff chalk at whatever height you set) if hem lengths stress you out, and you can also do it while you're wearing it which is extra helpful if your mannequin doesn't completely match you

I never felt the need to make patchwork until watching your videos, but having seen this & the quilted hoodie, and seeing the love and care you're able to put into it, I'm already planning a patchwork project themed around one of my favorite bands & embroidered with all of the lyrics that mean the most to me. It feels so silly to watch this video about the most beautiful and bright dress I've ever seen and have it give me the inspiration for the most rock/metal-inspired project I've ever done, but it really speaks to how universal art can be! Aside from that, I've been crocheting a pastel/celestial themed lace wizard hat so I have something silly and fun to wear in the spooky season. I adore circle skirts, and have even made a few dresses and shirts using the circle skirt method. Also a huge fan of princess seams, which are cut on the bias, so also warp quite a lot. Really there is nothing you can do pattern wise that would avoid wonkyness, as it’s caused entirely by the fabric. I have used a wool that didn’t shift at all, and a linen that warped so much I was able to recut the belt I had burned with my new iron. All you can do is hang it on your dress form and cut it the next day (or on a hanger, but don’t cut it on the hanger).

I make bespoke doll clothes with patterns available in human sizes. I make a facing for my human LeHenga circle "skirts". Using the lining There is another yt channel that does nothing but circle LeHenga called BL FABRIC that is a major go to for me, whether I make LeHenga or not. For my 1/6 size, i actually cut another entire dress. And yes, i also bond that,to the inside but i still have to turn up a hem, so i have used various trims including ruffling wire. I also bonded a 1/4 inch of the lining on the front or so, then turn it in And i have the best results by making it bondable. Once i did not have enough fabric, so i used pieces of iron on facing. Thank goodness it was a small project. I just subscribed.

i use this same patchwork technique using offcuts of men's suit pants; so cool and rewarding to see the ombre take effect using that technique!!! so glad this was displayed in a fashion show supporting such a good cause. you continually amaze me!! you could totally use the scraps to make bunting for decor, if you're looking for ideas for them

Absolutely stunning dress Carly. Like others have mentioned, a circle skirt is cut across several grains (cross, straight and bias) so there will always be some ‘drop’ as the fabric relaxes the most on the bias. Leaving it to hang for 24 hours before recutting the hem will help to keep an even hem. I always pin hem my circle skirts. Some call it a rolled hem. It gives me a much neater finish going across all the grains, so something to consider for future circle skirts. And if you ever need help with drafting a circle skirt in one or more panels, I have a circle skirt template on my website, which many have used and made gorgeous skirts with. Love seeing how your drafting skills get better with every video! 😍

It's beautifullll! I am almost finished with my king-size reversible t-shirt quilt, which has been an intense, probably unwise first sewing project. It's gonna be super imperfect, but I am going to do my best to lean into the imperfections. I have a section of four eight-square rows (half of the quilt) stitched together, plus two sections of two eight-row squares that I need to stitch together tonight, and then I can stitch those two halves together, and then I just need to bind the edges (but still have to cut the fabric and sew the strips together for that bit). I've been working on it since May, and I think!!!! I am really going to finish it this weekend, finally!!

Currently, I'm working on a Victorian gored corset, I'm hand-stitching waist tape in today. Next level tedious. Have you considered using a knotted piece of string to draft your circle hems? It's a really old method, back when people needed clothes but didn't know numbers and math. In this case, you would've anchored the string at the point that was where you drew the neckline radius, measure how long your dress would be with hem allowance, knot a pen at that length, and use it to draft your curve. I do this when I need a circle hem, collar, waist, whatever. I despise hemming so anything I can do to make it easier or shorter, I am all for.

Hey carl for circle skirt: fold the skirt in halves after cutting keeping the waistline even and the extra will show up on the hemline. Cut off and then fold again. And cut again. Leave hanging for few days and repeat the process again. This gives quiet an even hem. Then you can finally measure again to check for minute uneveness.
