Sewing a Robe à la Française || PART 1

Welcome to Part 1 of my Sacque back gown!
This video has been a long time coming, and I am so excited to finally be posting my construction process of a Robe à la Française!

I am a new subscriber and I loved the portions of the Robe a la Française seen on your vlog on Co Co. Watching your previous vlogs on this from the beginning of construction of the undergarments makes me want to learn to sew. I have a question about the back of the petticoat. Is it normal to use a different material for the back? Ive seen a few other costubers do the same thing but I never really understood why the backs are not made of the same fabric as the front of the petticoats. Other than that, I love your petticoat and dress.

Thank you so much for sharing your creation and letting us learn from you - I can't tell you how much I appreciate it. I noticed a distinct lack of jumping up and down yelling and cursing when you had to take the two unneeded panels out - which I think shows you have the patience of a saint - because I imagine unpicking the seams was just the start - I'm not a sewer myself - not much of one at least - but I imagine you had to remove the panels from the just bound waistband as well - then fix the hem line - even after calming down I'd have been a little snippy in the video when I got to that bit ;)

Amazing! Just finished part 4. As someone who hasn't actually sewn anything yet, I'm quite overwhelmed haha. I will be frankensteining a dress together for the time being, but hope I'm this advanced to start from scratch sooner than later! I was curious if you made your own stays and panniers and if not, where did you get them? I've been scouring etsy for stays and panniers but I don't know how to choose them.

Thank you! I did make my own stays and panniers :) I used the 1740s pattern from corsets and crinolines for my first pair and I used the pattern from costume close up for my maternity stays which are the ones you see in this video. And I can't remember which pattern I used for my panniers, but I do have videos of me making both the stays and panniers on my channel.

Also if you don't want to make stays, I have heard great things about redthreaded's stays and corsets!

So how did you come to get the petticoat pattern? Many people do not know how to drape, so you need to do a 1.2 and show how you got to that point!!

The pattern is only rectangles 😊 I figured out how long to make them by taking the side measurement over the hoops, the width measurement is the width of the material 😄 you can also check out my shaped petticoat video for more info.

leah reinsager I have an Industrial SunStar KM-250A. You should be able to sew this on any machine or by hand if you are up to the challenge 😊

I wanted to ask: where can I find fabrics for a robe a la francaise? I’ve been scouring the internet and I can’t find suitable sellers.

If you want 100% silk, Silk Baron in the US has beeeeeautiful silk. But, it is really pricey. If you don't want 100%silk, a faux silk taffeta would work and there are a few vendors on etsy that carry lovely faux silks. Definitely order a sample to check the weight because some can be super thin tissue taffeta. I think Rachel maksy used a satin for her starbucks francaise a couple years ago. If you want cotton, ikea has some fabulous 18th century prints! I followed the instructions in the American Duchess 18th Century Dressmaking Book (amzn.to/47O3E7t) and modified their pattern to my size. American Duchess did release a pattern with Simplicity if you are wanting to use a commercial pattern (amzn.to/45aCaqQ). I hope this helps! 😊

Thank you! The measurements I use change for every person :) The width of my silk is 40" (101cm), the length depends on the side measurement taken from the waist to floor over the pocket hoops. I hope that helps :)
