Love it! It's like, easy, breezy, practical spoopy. My first quarantine project was a pair of 18th century headstone themed pockets. I'm an archaeologist who works a lot with historical cemeteries, but I realized after the fact they could be interpreted as pretty gothy. Fun video!

Just a suggestion for the cold air coming in, lap blankets and afghans are definitely a good thing to have! 2/3 local independent shops seriously upped their website game during to the spring lockdown. It's fantastic to be able to order what I want, and know that if I'm going out to get something, I'm coming home with what I need. Admittedly the 3rd, which sells notions but not fabric lists the brands they carry online... but ordering requires telephoning. Which I'm sure is fine for most of the people they cater to, but come on... you need the millennials, and we don't do telephones.

US patent 304.638, pertaining to improvements of Singer’s industrial “buttonhole sewing machine,” was awarded in 1884. I’m not sure when Singer’s original buttonhole machine was patented, but I now feel perfectly comfortable using my 1940s Singer buttonhole attachment on on any 1880s onward clothing I make in the future. It felt like cheating before; I have little patience for hand sewing, especially on visible parts of a garment, but my technique is admittedly poor. I’ve not experimented with the attachment much, but the manual says you can adjust the upper and bobbin tensions to get a more “hand-made” appearance. Oh, and the best part of the old attachments is that they make button holes with rounded ends, not rectangular ones like most zigzag machines produce. IMO, they look more authentic at a glance, even if hand sewn buttonholes might be more appropriate.

Yes indeed! But my beautiful grandmother, born in 1900, made hers by hand. There are some of hers on my wedding dress. That said, I do love a beautiful mechanical buttonhole. My year old Bernina makes wonderful ones. So do my incredible singer buttonholers. Love machine made and handmade! So nice that we have a choice! ❤️

@@samanthakessel7285 Etsy! and yes. Low shank straight stitch machines. Look for ones made in the 1950s and on back, just make sure it's for low shank, straight stitch, machines. If it is listed for 221, then it will work on any treadle Singer low shank machine, including the 15, and 66. I can help hunt one down for you, if you wish.

Firstly, compared to my years on B the planet, you’re still very young. In fact, were I younger, you’d STILL be a sweet young lady. Love the blouse!!! The hat is cute, but the blouse.... swoon. I’d do long sleeves, as I’m at that age where I bruise just doing nothing. Long sleeves, high collars, & deliciously gorgeous long skirts cover a multitude of sins. 😉 Enjoy your new home!

I’d do long sleeves as well, because my climate isn’t suitable for not wearing long sleeves. In the winter half of the year I’m far more likely to wear two long-sleeved garments than none at all, and the average number of long-sleeves garments in the summer half of the year is at least one.

Love both the top and hat!! The most goth-y thing I've made was my first (and so far only) piece of tablet weaving. I used black as on of two colors, with the other being a purple & blue colorway (A Hundred Raven's Big & Bright colorway). I was just using leftover sock yarn I had on hand to test the craft out, and it ended up being delightfully goth.

I haven't made anything gothy lately, but I did watch this video while wearing a set of Halloween pajamas! I love your blouse and have been wanting to make a similar one for a long time. I'm trying to learn the difference between different types of lightweight cotton, so THANK YOU for that close-up shot of the lawn! The hat was a really cute surprise. As for 'why is it so cold in here?' From what I can tell in the video, your windows appear to be made of single-pane glass. Single-pane glass is literally just a single sheet of glass between the inside of your home and the outdoors, with no additional insulation. Insulation is usually provided by gasses in between two, sometimes more, layers of glass, as well as additional insulation in the frame of the window, which is the part that appears to be made of wood. The solution to this is to replace the old windows with modern ones, which can be expensive but are worth it. Assuming you live in the US, you can often get subsidies from your town, state, or energy supplier to help offset the costs of the new windows. Your house is old and may be registered with a historical society, which are generally run by the town the house is in. They are in charge of keeping historical houses from being demolished or damaged, and may be able to help you with resources vis a vis windows, etc. Also, see if you can figure out when your home was last worked on and if the wall insulation was updated. Fluffy, blown-in insulation eventually settles and loses effectiveness over time, and you may need to have more - installed? Is that the right word? Anyway, it's blown in with a kind of reverse vacuum from the attic and goes down the walls, between the studs. That will also do a lot to keep your home warmer. Source: My dad owns and operates a construction company and his favourite houses to work on are Victorians. I've learned a lot about construction.

Absolutely the black cat counts on the Goth spectrum. But it counts on the you're a totally awesome human being spectrum more. Thank you for getting a black cat from the Humane Society. Black cats (& dogs) are often the last ones to be adopted. & the first ones to be put down in animal shelters because they're so rarely adopted. People have an unnatural superstition about them being 'Bad Luck'. Which is a load of superstitious nonsense! To those fools I say - Do you know what it means when a black cat crosses your path? That it's on it's way somewhere else *THAT'S ALL!* It's just a cat it's no more a portent of 'Evil' than a rabbit or a squirrel (unless you happen to be in Central Park. In which case watch out for the squirrels, cause they are *SUPER* aggressive.🐿 😡😤 At least that's what my friend told me they were like. When she went there a few years ago.) is so stop worrying if you come across one when you're out & about.

Noir cat with startling greenish-yellow eyes has been welcomed into my residence and has declared me has her human. Her original name was Maleficent, which I thought was not fitting as at the time of meeting, she was super shy and wary. Because of her supposed nature, I named her Luna. It has now become Lunar Maleficent Black as now that she is comfortable around me, I have learned she is a little sasspot. Lol.

Today I made a tailors ham. In the most un-gothic fabric ever. Cream and green chintz on one side, and matching green wool felt on the other. So, not goth, and not wearable, but made me ridiculously happy anyway! As someone living in an apartment from 1912 ish yeah the Window Issue is a thing if they have been weatherproofed try checking if they need to be reglazed. About half the windows in my building need it and you can both hear and feel the difference standing near the windows that need new glaze.

As to what I have done that’s goth…I guess a cape I did in 2020. It was really fun because I had to wear an eye patch which meant I had no depth perception. I don’t care,I enjoyed it all the needle stab wounds and all because it made my time stuck on bedrest (2 months) bearable.

The local shop said it went from a month wait when the mask making frenzy kicked in around April, to now being a 4 month wait. Not, pay the deposit and get on a list to secure a date to bring in your machine, no, surrender your machine for 4 months... longer if they need to order parts. Apparently this is fairly common in my area. Thanks... but I'll keep cleaning, oiling, and crossing my fingers to keep it limping along. If you're not using your machine, because it's currently not in working condition, if you can afford to, I recommend taking it in sooner rather than later.

@@lynn858 seems crazy that with 4 month lead time they wouldn’t want you to keep your machine at home till it was closer to the time they could get to it!!! It would be standing room only!!! I lucked out that my guy was busy but not that crazy. That and I’m a collector of sewing machines so while my favourite was away I used the 301. Now I dream of having the room to set up both as the top stitching on the 301 is much nicer!!

But, the repair person took the time to locate a replacement foot for my serger on a parts machine they had back there, which meant a good price, and I was able to walk away with it that day. So while I think they're nuts, they made me a happy customer. When travel becomes a reasonable thing to do again, a friend is giving me her very first entry level machine, so I have a back up. And a machine that can handle a walking foot.

I've made hair things and facinators, but truth is, I haven't made much because I luck out in thrift stores finding gothy things that were not meant to be gothy. I DO want to make a goth version of an 80s does Edwardian dress.

Once the outside temperature drops to around freezing, forgoing long sleeves is no longer an option - in fact I usually wear at least two such garments.

I have a full length lightweight wool cossak coat in the works. I heavily altered an old Butterick pattern to get what I want. It will have side pockets and button down the front to the hip line. You might want to try marking with a white art pencil instead of chalk. Much cheaper than fabric pencilsand it washes out easily. Also for little holes like the one you ended up with, machine darn it with a thin embroidery thread or at the very least, Fray Check it.

They aren't goth, more Halloween; but I made a wrap dress with a mummy pattern on it, and a sweatshirt with skeletons, with hats, skulls, and starts. I'll wear them year round weather permitting, but they're only the 3rd and 4th clothing items I've made, and I'm pretty proud.
