Fourth video in a series of many that will teach kids how to make a simple hand sewn sock animal step-by-step. Videos are broken down into smaller segments. Video #1 in the series show supplies needed, Video #2 how to make the doll's body, Video #3 how to create the arms, Video #4 how to sew button eyes, Video #5 is designed to spark creativity and create details for the sock animal.
I talk often about my love of up-cycling with my school children. For this part of the project I remind children that buttons can be cut off of unwanted shirts. The shirt itself used for rags. I encourage them to talk with grandparents who have been raised in times of saving and as my Great Grandma Helen might say a time of "squirrel-in away" items. They may very well have a button collection that they would be willing to share.
My videos were made with my Elementary K-5 school children in mind. My attempt was to be as detailed as I could get in hopes that the videos and minimal supplies are all they would need to make a doll. My wording is intentional. CHILDREN MUST BE SUPERVISED USING SHARP NEEDLES, SCISSORS AND A SEAM RIPPER.
The supply list is as follows; one or two ankle or knee high socks. It doesn't have a to be a new one why not up-cycle a single sock! You will also need a needle (big eye needles are nice for kids but not necessary), thread, thimble, scissors, scrap cloth, pillow stuffing, buttons, seam ripper, pencil, pin cushion, a box or basket to store your projects in and a plastic gallon bag to hold individual projects. Take a look around your home ask yourself what other things could I use to make a sock animal? Items like felt, yarn, string, ribbon or stretchy gloves are great materials for details to! Have fun!
