It's made from wood, and is used to press down fabric after it has been ironed. This way there is less danger of scorching the fabric or stretching it out. The wood thing is called a "clapper."

It’s called a tailor’s clapper. It is used to permanently set a seam or crease after ironing. Quilters use them a lot.
