Excellent tutorial! I learned a few more things about this fun project, namely, depending on your stitch length, will determine how tight or loose your opening will be when you pull the thread

We call it fabric doilies here in the Philippines. My mom taught me how to do it when I was a kid back in the 80's and it had become a usual project in school in our practical arts subject. We used to make it into a table cloth or side table or embellishment on our curtains. It's an interesting hobby as well to avoid idle time.

She said the larger you stitch around the circle the larger the hole. Maybe you are using tiny stitches?
