@@NeverTooMany2023 I have about 35 machine in my collection, about one-third of which are treadles. I love sewing on treadle machines! My collection includes a Singer 201 (superb), several hand crank machines (wonderful for piecing small quilts), a Featherweight, and several 1970's vintage Kenmores which are truly the workhorses of the fleet. I also have the same Juki as yours.

That is great! I have been working on fine tuning our treadle so I can make something on it. They are quite the experience. We really want a hand-crank model at some point as well. That Juki is something else isn't it? I really enjoy using it...when my wife lets me. :)

@@NeverTooMany2023 I'm mainly making clothes for Blythe dolls at the moment (and some Barbies). I was lucky enough to get a thrift store mechanical Juki which I use as my main machine. My oldest machine is a Hexagon from 1919 which still works. I've had it for about 30 years. I'm looking forward to watching your wife's restoration videos because I have a few machines which could do with a bit of tlc. 😊

Thank you for the tour and for sharing your beautiful machines. I love to sew! I like to collect old machines to fix up and "test drive" and had kept it a guarded secret because I thought it was shameful to have so many. I have only ever bought very old machines but have been gifted newer machines that frustrate the owners or simply are unwanted. Your video is wonderful and encouraging to watch. I'm not alone!! I have a treadle and a 1937 Singer that sew like a dream. I do have an older Bernina that was given to me too if I ever need a fancy stitch. I give away machines I know I'll never use but I've never needed to buy a new and expensive machine to quilt or sew. Oh and the Hot Wheel collection is also cool.

I have two 401A machines. One was my mother's. She bought it brand new in about 57. The other is mine I got used about 70. These were the first "top hat" machines. They are both in great shape and in use. Hoorah for older machines!

I have had 2 medical doctors tell me that I do not have an addictive personality. I bought my current all around machine over 30 years ago from Sears. 12 years later my neice took up sewing on her Mom's machine (which was a lemon out of the factory door) so I found a working Morse for $12 that I wanted to give her for her birthday only to find out her Mom had purchased her a new plastic fantastic. I decided to keep the Morse in case my Kenny died. (It has some plastic and my first Singer T&S died at 14 yo.) My brother gifted me a serger that I never even requested.. Mom gave me her 15-88 treadle. At that point, enough is enough, (though I do want a donor for my Kenny.) A 201 was the only machine I thought I might consider if I came across one for $50 or less. (Fat chance!) Finally collected the sewing machine my Gran left me when she passed several years ago. I remembered her having a 400 or 500 series so I knew it was time to make a decision regarding the Morse. I now had too many. Miraculously, what she left me was her sister's machine. Aunt Birdie bought a brand new Centennial 201-2 in 1951 and now it's mine. I've named her Birdie. The 15-88 is Ms. Anita Baker - my favorite female Singer. Basically, my machines seem to hunt me down. I only hope when my Mom's time comes, my neice or nephew will be able to give those 3 orphans a home.

The Singer 15-91 that belonged to your wife's Grandmother appears to have a 1936 Texas Centennial Expo badge. A rare machine for sure and so nice to see one that has remained in the family for so long.

I found out Accidentally that I could repair them because my last child was headed states & states away to college!!! 😢😳😭😭🤣 Then I started a free sewing & quilting class for folks that could not afford to do so. Loved your video! And you can definitely never have too many! I got bit by the collecting bug about 15 years ago and now I have over 125 machines squirreled away in every nook and cranny in my house. There is nothing I love more than finding some old rust frozen clunker and restoring it to shiny beautiful glory. The Singers are my favorites. What neck of the woods are y’all in? I’m in Texas (near Houston) if you are close I’d be happy to give you a featherweight. I have so many and I would be happy to see one go to someone who is passionate about them. (I have several that are in need of fixing up) but if you want a portable machine that is definitely the one you want! So light! I really delighted in your phrase “crown jewels” because I have 2 in my collections I consider my Crown Jewels. One is a 1940’s featherweight that had been stuck out in someone’s barn for probably 50 years! It was completely rust frozen. The paint was all peeling, it was a mess! I soaked the entire machine in wd40 for weeks and still couldn’t get it to move. One day I figured I had nothing to lose and took a hammer and chisel to the top anvil looking thing and started hammering it to see if I could get it to budge. After quite a few whacks it budged and then I was able to free it all. I took it all apart including the motor and we took all the old paint off down to bare metal (we is me and my dad who helped me) and we completely restored it and I put custom flower decals I made myself on there. It is a gorgeous machine and I will always cherish it because it was my first project and it was nice time spent with my dad. My other crown jewel is a Singer Model 12 New Family or New Home (I can’t ever remember what it is named) but it has inlaid mother of pearl all over it. It is so amazingly beautiful and it boggles my mind how they made a utilitarian machine so ornate and beautiful. I am told all the inlaid mother of pearl machines were all decorated by hand. (I don’t know if that is true or not) it is from 1872 and it is a treadle and it still sews like a dream which blows my mind that something made 151 years ago is still fully functional! What an engineering marvel. Sorry I got a little long winded here! It was just so exciting to see someone else that gets it about saving the past.

I am still convinced that they multiply at night while we sleep. :) I agree that there is nothing cooler than reviving an old machine that someone has given up on. They are all special and they all deserve love and attention. Sometimes it just takes the right home to be found. Right after I got married my husband took me shopping for a used machine and I zeroed in on a Featherweight. I used it for years but lost it in a move. One day I'll get another. May I ask you a question. I sew handbags, and lately I have been trying to make vinyl handbags, I use an old 70's Montgomery Wards machine but am looking for a machine that can go over thicker fabric. What would you recommend for my bags. I have a brand new Singer Heavy Duty machine but my Wards machine goes over thicker fabric then the Singer. I really prefer to buy an older Singer. Are you familiar with the Singer 15-91?

I feel the same way about my beloved. It started with a 15k to fit into my old treadle cabinet. Then I started to use it. Wow! Hooked. Now we have 11 Singer Sewing machines various models including a cobblers machine. Love love love using these machines. I am in Awe!

I have a 15 that we got a Goodwill for .59 cents . All it needed is a bobbin case and a new end on the cord. The tension is great and sews beautifully.

So cool. I recently picked up my first antique sewing machine from my in laws, it was in very bad shape. It's an improved family from 1888 and hope to get it going again and be able to get hold of the table. (They wanted to have that table as decoration, but never got to it, so it probably is in better shape, in their basement).

Great video. I totally agree with your assessment of the Singer 201-2. It's without doubt the very finest home sewing machine ever made. Precise stitches, smooth, powerful and quiet. Anyone who doubts this, sew on one for 5 minutes. You will become a believer. The Singer 66 is a very under rated machine. Singer tended to be very conservative in motor rating. That 66 will plow through anything you can fit under the presser foot.

As our collection grows, it is still at the top of our list for favorite machine. Also agree that the 66 is a tough unit. I love the faceplate on the 66. It's one of my favorites. My 1948 201 has the one with the Celtic-like design, and it's so pretty too, more so than the later Striated plate. Same with Featherweight machines. I know that the 201 and FW both thread from right to left, whereas my other black Singer machines thread left to right.

I have several machines. My favorite three are Pfaffs: 1471 IDF, Hobbymatic with IDF, and 1209 IDF. My Elnas are cam machines. I think I gave my Singers all away because I really like the old Pfaffs.

Decided I had to only collect one type. I chose Singer (mostly because I already had multiple family machines). I have old hand crank, treadle, early Singers. Mid century and new. My chiropractor rehomed her Grandmother's machine to me! Not all in one room yet but that is my eventual hope. Such fun!!

Thank you for your tour. Just Beautiful! In 1968, I was10 years old, sewing on an old Kenmore, not sure how old the machine was. I was already making my own clothes. I didn't like that I was getting shocks from it. Still sewed beautifly . In 1972 my Dad ( who restored corvair's for a living, known as the Corvair Man of Oshkosh, WI ) Bought me a brand new Elna flat bed. Like I was using in middle school. I loved her. Made many things, from clothes to curtains. Life happened! I started back sewing my children's Halloween costumes. As time went on I started making Purses, In the middle of an order, elna stopped doing a good top stitch...and I always had her serviced. Not having much money I looked for something and could not afford an elna? Anyway I bought a Necchi. She was great for a bit. ( I struggle with tension on all Machines) somewhere in there I bought a Singer HD, made 500 mask's for covid. and more purses. Still struggling with tension for top stitching and thickness. ( and Money) bought another Singer??? I have also been volunteering for quilting for church. I have dabbled in cleaning and fixing my own machines. Now they think I know everything, I Know nothing but cleaning. I should get to the point!!! I have been gifted many Singers, one is the green machine. I think she could be a power horse for purses. Hello Sue. Spartan was made by Singer, as a lower priced model. I know they are pretty plain, without all the decals. My neighbor has one, in addition to 3 Featherweights. The Spartan is the same size as Singer's 3/4 sized machines, like the 99 and 28/128. Hope this helps. Renita George

I inherited my mums machines, an Elna grasshopper , lovely, and a Necchi ( a so called monday production..)and my great grands Singer hand crank. I also have a hand crank with electric, really shakes the whole house. I got my Bernina Sport 801 40 yrs ago, my best pal! Bought a cheap lightweight Brother to travel with for meetings, an ok machine, but is almost impossible to thread after the hook got bent, so little space for my hands. So I really didnot need to collect any. But then I found an Elna Lotus….

I have two Singer treadles one in a cabinet. One has a shuttle bobbin the other is a 66 bobbin. We have a Singer 99 and 15-91. My husband bought me the complete set of Singer Zig zager attachment. A dear friend gave me a Consew P1209 industrial machine. I have three Janome serger, two Janome regular machine, and embroidery one is a Brother, also one regular brother.

You just popped up in my video. I’ve got about 16 vintage machines. Collecting since 2017. My go to is a 1953 Singer 201. I don’t agree you need a modern machine. I don’t have one and have been sewing for 60 years. Your 60s machines are probably Singer 15 Japanese clones that fit into a Singer cabinet. Easy to find parts. Your Universal probably just needs an adjustment. Treadle cabinets are easy to find. Can you change them out? I’ve even added a motor to my 1923 Singer 66 Red Eye. It’s very easy to do. Your cabinets are beautiful.

Simply Beautiful ! I love this collection of well made sewing machines, the variety. They just don't make stuff like this anymore, that is why they are still here. I agree with what you said about this generation. Even with art and other collectibles they are mainly into contemporary/modern, no antiques/vintage. I watched a video of a 24 yr old young lady today discussing her craft room. She was into everything vintage. So maybe there is hope that some will appreciate and take care of these amazing treasures from time past. So far I have nine of them and they all work and I use them as well. Thanks for giving them a home.

I love sewing machines too, though I prefer hand sewing...I have three, currently. One from e-bay, a Singer from 1884 or close to that, another Singer from 1922 and yet another from the late 40's. one was free and two were good deals! I often see some in the thrift store that look to be from the 70's, perhaps. I always wonder if I should buy a couple more. I love the older ones the most but your video has me thinking about taking a second look next time I see one. Thanks for the inspiration!

Awesome! I have a collection that just grew like Topsy too...now I have 13 Singers, plus Berninas, Necchis, and Vickers made machines....including my grandmothers' BSM, a Vickers 7000. I'm working through, first freeing up, then restoring...so much fun! And I'm also a quilter. Got into this completely by accident when my machine motherboard needed repair and I couldn't afford it so I got a Bernina Favorit 540 to carry on sewing.

​​@@NeverTooMany2023 Vickers were made in Britain. I'm in NZ, so we get alot of British and European machines. Vickers also made machine guns, ammo, and Spitfires. At one time, they employed more British people than any other company. It's a simple VS, like the 27, but has reverse.

An awesome collection! However I didn't see an Elna or a knee operated machine. I learned to sew on my grandmother's Singer (late 1920's) with a long bobbin and a knee control. I still have the machine in my collection, amid my Elnas.

We have the same addiction. Cannot avoid wanting to save these vintage beauties. Having too many to remember i finally made paper tags that hang on a loop of string with the date and model number of each machine. I have a 1963 Singer zig--zag machine that I bought new for $99.00 to make maternity clothes when I was pregnant with my daughter. I have other machines, one that was my mother's and one that belonged to my aunt, who made her living with her needle.... My Singer is the best. I love it and use it still almost every day. I quilt and make clothes. It sews a fine seam and will always have a place in my sewing room.

I’m now a retired dialysis nurse from New Jersey. And before I retired and moved to Puerto Rico, I bought from a private home a mint singer 201-2 with a queen Ann table cabinet and bench for $150.00. It has a blue Centennial blue logo on it. I love her so much. I love the front drop in bobbin. The table has the pedal fold down lever used as a knee pedal to sew. The table just need a few touch up. I would love to get a newer advanced model but with a front drop in bobbin. It’s the only one I have that I could afford.

I hear ya. The machines just keep finding their way to me. Like you, I feel the need to rescue them and give them love. My oldest is a fiddlebase Singer VS2 from 1887. It's been modified, repainted, and newer decals. Someone had cut the low bobbin winder off and replaced it with one built into the belt guard. There was no motor with it, but it came with two old foot controllers. My plan is to put an aftermarket hand crank on it, as I'm not concerned about keeping it original, since it's modified. I have a Singer 27 treadle machine from 1895 that I have serviced,and it's fantastic. I have two 66's. One (1920) has the Red-Eye decals,which are very worn. I have serviced that one as well,and it's great. My other 66 is from 1929 and is identical to yours, including the awesome cabinet (My favorite of the 5 cabinets I have. Mine even had the oil can in the bracket.) I also have a 1948 201-2, that has been serviced. I've sewn 3 quilts on it. I have three 99's (2 are K's). The one that's not is my very first vintage machine,and the one that started it all. It has the foot controller shaped like the sole of a shoe. One of my 99K's is a hand crank model from 1915. I have a 1941 Singer 128 with the crinkle finish. I have acquired four machines in the late 1950's to early 60's Era. Two are Universal,one of which is a straight stitch machine. One is a Necchi. One is my latest acquisition, and is a Singer Special Zig Zag model 478, that takes cams. If the woman who gave it to me can't find them, I'll have to look for some. Whew! My sewing machines total 19 at this time. I have one computerized model,and it's not a workhorse. My 1991 Viking is, though. But,I've fallen in love with vintage machines, just like you both have. Sorry this is so long, but your collection and story is amazing and really speaks to me. This is the first time I've visited your channel, but not the last. Thanks for sharing. Renita George

In a conversation with her, she had commented that people don't want those old machines. Well, maybe some people, but what I've found is that there's a huge following of vintage sewing machine addicts (I'm one, lol), and much information and many blogs and videos out there. I have a brand new Singer heavy duty machine, but my Montgomery Wards machine sews over thicker fabric then the Singer. How well does your 15-91 work for sewing handbags? I use mostly vinyl material. Thanks so much. I also have an older Brother but havent tried to use it much for handbags, its a knee pedal only and I dont care for that, kind of awkward for me. I tried to change it to the floor but the cord is too short.

I enjoyed your tour very much! I'm a collector and like to rehab my own machines as well. I have a LOT to learn, but in the past several years I've gained a great deal of mechanical knowledge and some historical knowledge as well. I have also heard the Singer "Rolls Royce of sewing machines" story. I'm not certain that it's true, some say yes, others say no, but I believe Rolls Royce very likely used the 201-2 to sew their leather upholstery - at least for a little while anyway. Unlike mass-produced vehicles, they make their autos slowly, carefully and with precision. It just seems to make sense that they'd use a quality sewing machine. I have a Universal badged machine very similar to yours but not yet had time to work on it. It will be quite interesting to see how well it does or doesn't work. I also have a White Rotary 77 from 1948 or 49; a SWEET machine. It was my Mother's and is still in the original cabinet. I began learning to sew on it about 63 years ago. Mom taught me and it's a highly sentimental reminder of her. It's surprisingly powerful and easy to maintain. I have a 201-2 and a 301A as well. For straight-stitchers, I like the 301 best - mostly because it's aluminum and even though still heavy, it's easy enough to move from place to place, as I don't have a table for it. But they both make perfect stitches. From research, I've learned that after WWII, in order to help Japan rebuild their devastated economy, the U.S. Government gave the Singer 15 class machine design to Japan (whether Singer agreed with this or not, I don't know). It's possible the patent had expired; I really don't know, but either way, Japan took that patent and ran with it, producing thousands of excellent, all-metal, precision made, sturdy, dependable, and often VERY colorful machines. I like my Singer machines, but I'm a huge fan of Kenmores - mostly the ones made in Japan by Soryu and Maruzen/Jaguar. A great majority of them were designed by a brilliant engineer named Charles Harrison: www.britannica.com/biography/Charles-Harrison. Mr. Harrison designed highly functional, easy to use, durable machines for many years, among many other items for Sears. I got my first Kenmore in 1969 and have loved them ever since. I have a modest collection of "Kennies", including a marvelous 3/4 size model 158-1040, a full-sized machine in a small package. It's a great travel machine in that it weighs only around 18 lbs, sews like a dream and has several useful zig-zag stitches. It's a great little machine from the mid 70's and I love it. If you come across any Kenmores of the early 60's through the mid 70's, please don't pass them by. With a few exceptions, they're terrific. Thanks again for a terrific and very interesting video!

I have a 1917 Western Electric with a swing away motor that I converted to a hand crank for using in RV when we boon be dock. I call her Weezie and when we have electric I load all the bobbins ( my arm gives out on the bobbin winding by hand lol) so I always have them handy.

Those machines are gems. I had a Pfaff (229) and it needed major work, Boyed Walkers was closed and mad the decision to get a new machine (mechanical) and got the Husqvarna Viking Emerald. I would never admit to how many sewing machines I have! Are you kidding? My husband would do what he does best…throwing or giving my belongings away! So, they are deep in the closets (not all of them) and I take them out when the hubs is out of town and I clean and oil them, show them love and use them. This is amazing! Thanks for making me feel normal! I got my first machine in September 2022, a second in October , then a third in December…then a surprise featherweight in January. First two are Japanese clones from Goodwill, then a Spartan from Goodwill, and then the featherweight. I’ll be honest-the Spartan is my favorite of them all! The US government asked Singer to NOT patent the Singer 15, after World War 2 destroyed the Japanese manufacturing industry by bombing them. The Singer 15 clones are a result of this agreement, and sewing machine manufacturing replaced and rebuilt Japan's manufacturing industry. This is what revived Japan's economy post WW2. They are referred to as "badged class 15 clones" or HA-1 models, and were sold by contract and badged with a variety of badge names.

I'm reading a book called The Dressmaker of Khair Khana. True story of an Afghan woman who started a dressmaking business employing 100 women under the suppression of the Taliban. She refers to using a machine she calls a' zigzag' that dies 6 different stitches. I have 3 Singers - the 301A my Mom taught me to sew on; a 1990s Singer I just use for casual sewing; and a 27 Treadle machine I was excited to get at an estate sale a month ago. I've since bought 2 manuals and a repair kit. So far I've oiled it up and need to clean the insides now. It all seems to work except the bobbin winder doesn't move. I'll probably need to take it apart.

That is super cool! The sewing machine has been changing the world for many, many years. Wow, you learned to sew on a 301a? That is one of my unicorns :) Just picked up a 401a and a 503. I really want to complete the slant-o-matic collection with the 301a. Great work servicing your own machines. The way my wife and I learned was to just start taking stuff apart. As long as you keep good track of the pieces, you can't go wrong. What an empowering feeling to know that you have taken apart and reassembled a piece of history! @NeverTooMany funny I never knew my 301A was special. It was just my Mom's and it works! I do as much sewing on paper as fabric, to the horror of my local sewing shop repair guy. But when pressed, he said use the 301A for paper sewing (rather than Singer 5050c) because it's a much stronger machine. And yes lots of micro-businesses around the world started with a sewing machine!

Lol. It is funny that I was unaware of the whole Slant-o-matic series until recently. I am one of the only collectors that does not own a Singer 221 (Featherweight). They are super overpriced and really a novelty at this point (not to diminish their place in history as a ground breaking piece of equipment that gave women of the 1950's freedom and comradery in the sewing world)...but that was before the 301a came out. It is the "big sister" of the Featherweight. It has the same brilliant engineering, it's only a few pounds heavier, has a built-in handle, has a more powerful motor, and is available at a fraction of the cost of the Featherweight. To be honest, I really want one of each...but then I have a bit of a problem :)

Great video! Really enjoyed it. My wife and I have recently got into vintage sewing machines. We’ve got 10-12. Its funny. It just gets in your blood. I watched your video because of the “You can never have too many.” I totally agree! I’d like more of them too. Great hobby. (My wife and I are starting to take sewing classes, as well.). @@NeverTooMany2023 We’ve got both our grandmothers Singer Machines. I bought a trendle Singer at auction 30 years ago for $7. Always liked. Kind of forgot about it. Recently, I’ve been hooked again vintage machines, but now on Kenmore (mid-70’s) All metal machine. Some in cabinets. Others in mobile cases. Its kind of addicting.

The Singer 201 is a sports car, the Kenmore rotary is truck. We have these also, each was a $20 thrift store find and we love them both!

I had a Singer 222, sold it for over $1200.00. I Still have a few machines, including two industrial walking foot machines, and a Parlor Treadle machine made in 1916 and a couple others. Had a needle feed machine, and three other walking foot industrial, and one that had built in different stitches, but sold them. I found a model 221, it needs some TLC. I enjoy restoring them.

Wow! You have had some cool machines. I am super jealous! I love making bags and dust covers, and heavy outdoor gear. I am hoping to someday end up with a walking foot/needle feed/triple feed industrial machine that will handle the heavier projects a little better. My Singer 223 does a really good job until I get to the multiple layers of canvas and nylon and such. What kind of projects do you use your industrial walking foot machines for? Really enjoy your video. I have 2 Kenmores from the mid 70s made in Japan with cams. Have a Pfaff sewing/ embroidery machine made in Germany. The best sewing machine I've ever sewn on A couple Brothers. I still miss my Featherweight I lost in a move. It was my first machine. As far back as I can remember which is 2 when my mom stepped away from her sewing machine to answer the door and I tried to sew and ran the needle through my index finger nail, I've loved machines!

My mother had a Featherweight that I'm sure was purchased new.. She did all her mending and sewed for herself and 5 daughters. My husband one day said let's go look for a used sewing machine.He kept looking at a $20. Singer in a cabinet but I spotted the Featherrweight on the floor not realizing it was like mom's. It wasn't as worn looking as the other machine. We paid $40. for it. That was 1970. And I was 2 years o)d when I ran the need)e thru my finger. I did run another one thru a finger but did not hit the nail while making Cabbage Patch dolls on a Kenmore.Ididnt know until recently that Singer made a zigzag attachment for the Featherweight. I had the buttonhole attachment for mine and it made great button holes. Happy machine shopping.

And my husband thought I had too many - NOT! I absolutely love your collection! I am also a quilter and sewist! I only have 5 - 2 Husqvarna- 2 Singer - 1 Bernina! One of my Singers was my grandmother’s and it is a Slant-O-Matic! I learned to sew on this machine and was so thrilled to be able to bring it to my house. @@NeverTooMany2023 the model is a 403 Special and it has all the cams that came with it. My grandfather purchased it on payment plan in 1961 and gave it to my grandmother on her birthday so that she could make Christmas gifts. One of the first things she made was felt stockings for her grandchildren that Christmas. The original cabinet was in bad shape and we had to just put it in the cabinet graveyard……BUT on a trip to the Habitat Restore store my husband found another one just like mine in a beautiful cabinet. The machine was in horrid condition - not salvageable except for parts which is what he did! He then finished the cabinet for me and that is where we put MamMa’s machine. I am so thankful to have this heirloom! These are the workhorses of the sewing industry! I look forward to seeing future videos and always remember “If you sew an hour today; tomorrow you are an hour more efficient” Jenny Doan of Missouri Star Quilt Co. What a beauties! Great collection. I collect sewing machines too, but made in soviet block countries (Russian Chayka, Eastern German Veritas, Polish Radom, Czechoslovakian LADA, etc). Just fixing and servicing machines for resale too. I wanna give people best experience with serviced machines because most of common zig-zaggers are out of tune.

One made in 1983, factory new condition, never used (totally out of tune and lost screw on bobbin case). Second machine in good technical condition, but have visual damage (on sale, waiting for a future customer). Also, I spend a lot of time for cleaning mess parts list for personal use of Singer machines (all full and short lists for 66, parts list for 15-88, parts list short and full for 15-91).
