I was buried in fleece a year ago, so cut it into kennel-sized pieces, doubled it, sewed them together and donated them to the animal shelter. Fleece is perfect because it dries in a flash, it’s very warm and soft and kennel workers can easily fold it to fit a space or stack the pieces.

I got the same comment from my daughter when my granddaughter was born, neutrals, soft colours please. Now she is three, my granddaughter's favourite colours are pink and purple, the brighter the better, and unicorns. She also loves the clothes I make her with "Bluey" character fabric, so hang in there Jan, the bright colours will come back. And thank you for this, I do need to sort and card my fabric.

I learned a long time ago if you are sewing something for a newborn you are really sewing for the mama. If you want to make something for a child you have to wait until they are 3 or 4. Ask what they like turtles, rainbows, hearts etc. and of course what colors do they like. There is nothing better than watching a child really look at a quilt before they wrap up in it. I made a bug jar quilt for one of my grandnephews he was so excited and amazed that they looked like real jars with bugs in them he had tons of questions. After explaining that I had cut and sewn the pieces together he told his mama "she made this with her own two hands". That is priceless. Also by the time the child is 3 or 4 mama has learned it's more about pleasing the child instead of everything being matchy matchy.

I sometimes think buying fabric and patterns is as much of a hobby as sewing itself😂!! I do try to declutter from time to time, though, because it can get overwhelming.
@i.b.64013 күн бұрын
It is, same with all craft supplies. In the nineties, movies conditioned us to think of shopping as a hobby, and we haven't ever shed that notion. I try to be better at that. This year, I resolved not to ponder what I want to make and then find fabric, but look at my fabric and ponder, what I could do with it.

Thanks for this great video Jan! I paint and sew so I tend to buy fabric because I pretty much consider it my quilting & sewing "paint". Problem is I tend to love bright fabrics like Kaffe & Tula but our house is pretty much a soft spa-like palette. Our kids don't want that bright stuff either. I sew on a Philanthropy team so I guess I can always make some quilts out of my brighter fabrics to donate. Anyway I do enjoy having this fabric in my stash. Love all your content!

I have met lots of quilters who have bins and drawers full of fabric but who rarely shop their stash. They end up buying yards of fabric that they LOVE, but have no plan for how they will use it or don't have anything to coordinate with it. I would encourage you to consider buying only what you need for a particular project, like creating your own kit. Then when you have time you can tackle one of your projects and you will have everything that you need to make it without having spent money on fabric that you may never use.

Great tips here, Jan. Thank you! In the last several years, I've developed a very painful neuropathy and had to stop almost all sewing and quilting. However, my brain tends to convince me that I *can* still sew and that I need to buy this or that new fabric for a project that I KNOW will never get made. I partly blame my massive stash on my situation, but I also blame the quilt fabric industry. Doesn't it seem like each designer has double the fabric lines each year, as opposed to several years ago?? And with social media, the emotional pressure I feel to BUY that next line - and the next - and the next, is real. It's all SO OVERWHELMING. And unfortunately, I don't have the pain reserves necessary to declutter/destash, so I sit in a mess of craft supplies all day every day (not exaggerating - my sewing room is my bedroom!). It's depressing. And since getting sick, I've lost all my friends, so no one to come help me. ARGH! Thanks for listening to me gripe, y'all!!

No problem. Thanks for sharing. YOU GOT THIS. Take a little at a time. Maybe take one pile a week, if that is where you need to start. I'm sure it's draining your energy and affecting your health. I have really big stash (though bit smaller then yours) and I love to have it. I live in Europe and fabric is very expensive here so normally I shop on sales, especially when sale is for off-cuts, bolt ends, etc. I know what fabric I like to use (mainly knitwear) and what I most often sew so having decent stash helps me to avoid stress and saves time and money. I do not buy something just because it is on sale. It has to be "sale + my favorite fabric & color" combo.

There are “fabric collections “ and “ fabric stash’s“. Both serve a different purpose. One brings joy to look at, one is utilitarian and used for sewing. Buy fabric for specific projects. Donate leftover fabric, make book bags for the library book sale. Or bags for the food banks..

I just reorganized my fabric and measured everything and added a tag. Then I took all my fat quarters. Instead of being in the square you buy, I took a piece of comic board and sized it to the "shoeboxes" I keep them in color(s). Ironed and refolded. I was able to fit everything in them instead of stuffing and overflowing. My next project was all my scraps! I had so many! I pressed them all and made 10", 5", 2.5 and then 2.5 strips. I know someone will cringe, but I chucked the rest...and there's no turning back because I sent the bags of crumbs and anything less than 2.5 to the dump. My goal this year is to make baby boxes with quilts, burp cloths, etc. for my 10 grandkids. They are 23 yrs down to 7, but even if I'm gone from this earth, they'll have baby stuff made by Nana. And, make scrap quilts.

Ok, that does it!!!! Just kidding. No, that term makes my skin crawl and I don't want to be known as a "hoarder". So, you've motivated me to make a more aggressive approach. Thanks for sharing! ❤️

My stash of fabric is stored in clear boxes and split into Spots, Stripes, Floral, Stars, etc 😊but I don’t have bolts of fabric. I think I may have a touch of OCD as my sewing threads are colour coded into small zip-lock bags with matching filled bobbin - sad, or what?!!

I’m of a similar disposition and it saves a ton of time since everything is organised and ready to go! Whether or not it’s OCD, it works for me and obviously works for you too 😊😂

This video pretty much slapped me in the face! LOL Years and years ago I decided I wanted to learn to quilt. I bought a new sewing machine, several rulers, patterns, and totes of fabric. However, I never made even a quilt top or many squares, lost interest and sold all my totes of fabric in a yard sale. Later when I retired, I had that same desire to learn to quilt again, and the process of buying fabric started over. I guess you could call me a fabric "hoarder" as I have totes of fabric everywhere again and have made 2 quilt tops and completely finished 1 quilt completely for a friend at Christmas a couple of years ago. My daughter does Not sew and has no interest to do so. I really need to downsize my fabric stash and need to regain some money in the process but have no clue in the pricing that would move it but not "give it away". Would you have any advice on this? Thanks in advance.

Now in process of using a big scrap of starry night chinoiserie to cover an ottoman that ripped the leather on top due to feet there while watching tv. My daughter gave to me now to repurpose.

How do you felt your wool sweaters? My friend gave me her mom’s wool poncho to sew a bag for her. I’m afraid I will ruin it…

Am no longer a fan of fleece, especially when you wash items made with it. Paid like $40.00 years ago for a fleece dog bed - never again. Did the fleece no sew blanket once - never again. Made stuff for my local animal shelter with all my fleece that I had left. Like the baby blankets at Dollar Tree for snuffle mats for the local animal shelter too. Now I use the soft blankets for 5.00 or less for my dog obedience classes. Old towels for the one side and even a part of the mat I cut up clean old socks for a snuffle portion of the mat. Helps new dog owners see just how effective snuffle mats can be. Hope that helps. TY for this video. Most of my fabric is 1/2 or 1 yard pieces as I make washable and reversible tote bags in bulk. A minimum of 20 at a time. (No birthing of the bags, lining is tacked down, handles double stitched between the bags). Sometimes my friend will grab some fabric at thrift stores too. Finally completed my first burrito pillowcase and hope to do a few more of those, along with READ pillows for our local READ Therapy Dog program.

Cluttered space = cluttered brain. So 'liberating' to clear the decks

Maybe you could make little bundles of fabric you want to donate and have a give away for some of your subscribers 😊 Just a thought 😉

How about taking a picture of the fabric in the store, with your phone, but not buying it?
