What is the difference between a cover stitch machine and a chain stitch machine? I have both on my machine, but I don’t know what this means.

Hi @dayzemae9015 ! A CoverHem stitch is designed to be used more for topstitching such as hemming and is particularly suited for knits and sportswear. It's a very stretchy stitch. Because a cover hem can be used to topstitch it can also be selected to add decorative effects on fabric. The chainstitch can also be used as a topstitch and is particularly decorative when the chain side shows up on the right side of the fabrics. In addition, the chainstitch can be used to sew a seam. You'll see it in some ready mades. Some folks like to use the chain stitch as a basting stitch because it can be easily removed. Think of the stitching on pet foot or potato sacks. That is a chain stitch. Personally, I don't use it for seams because it is a little bulk and if the chain get broken in the wrong place it can cause the stitch to unravel.
