I've always done it this way for my kids' jeans, but never thought of hiding the extra fabric under the old seam. I simply sergered is as best I could or just leave it uncut if it's not too long, so I can open it back up when kids grow taller. This is an excellent idea and well demonstrated. Thank you very much, Sir. Will definitely be useful!

GENIUS! Someone once did this for me at a tailor, without even asking me if that's what I wanted, i just said "original hem", my mind was absolutely blown. I honestly have been trying to do this at home, I posted on sewing forums, no one knew what I was talking about, and here is the technique. I was so close to figuring it out on my own but this is an easier technique. I use vice clamps on the thick parts because I live in an apartment and don't want to be banging on stuff like a crazy person. This short person thanks you very much, lol.

This is the best method I have seen yet, very clever and time saving. No unnecessary fluff and the results are factory quality (which is great for Jeans) Let's face it, no one wants a pair of jeans that looks like their mom made them. lol. I have done a lot of sewing and for my jeans I'll be using this method from now on. I would also like to say that when I have a lot of stiches to remove on heavy fabric I just pull the folds apart until I can see the inside of the stiches and CAREFULLY alternate, cutting some of them with a razor blade then pulling as much thread out as I can at a time. (That's an Upholstery trick). That is the same type of machine my mother taught me to sew on.

Such an excellent tutorial. Other instructors that I have seen for this kind of hem has the original gold thread taken out before sewing the original hem on to the pant leg. I think it makes so much more sense to do it the way you are showing - after the hem is sewn. Makes the concept of tucking seam allowance inside much clearer.

You will never know if you can do it or not if you don't try it's ok to fail couple times how we learn this technique shown is a little more custom with the second step I'm going to be giving it a try but on my other jeans I stopped after the first step and ironed them flat which many videos show. Great tutorial thanks for the updated version. i will buy a new pair of jeans just to try this out. thank you. i dont have the sewing foot like yours, but i do have a foot to sew zips which looks like yours doubled(mirror image), I am sure that should work as well. Should you know which sewing foot i am talking off, you may like to advise your viewers- just a thought. thanks once gain

+Satsad satsad Wonderful! If you don't have a one-sided sewing foot for the first part of the hem process (1:09), a regular-standard sewing foot should work fine.

That's great to hear! You don't have to get a super fancy or expensive machine to start. There are many reasonably priced ones that are really good. I do recommend looking at ones that can handle heavier fabrics if you plan to do hemming on jeans.

Buy a vintage machine, pre 1970 if you want it to sew heavy stuff. Most new machines can't handle it.

Patricia Duvall it depends on what kind of sewing you’d like to do and your budget. I use an industrial machine but for what I teach it isn’t necessary. If you do a lot of Jean alterations look for a machine that can handle heavy denim and fabrics. Avoid the light or portable machines.
