Very nice to have older men learning to hand sew. Thank you for your tutorial. Beginner hand sewer, here. Electric sewing machines intimidate me, so I’m learning about hand sewing, while saving up for either a hand cranked or a treadle sewing machine. UPDATE: As of yesterday, I’ve brought home an antique treadle sewing machine. Singer Model 12, made in 1877. The elderly gentleman who sold it to me even sat at the machine & showed me that it worked. First thing I did was take all of the thread out & learn how to thread the shuttle, thread up the machine & the needle, today I will thread my bobbins. This treadle sewing machine only does a straight stitch, so, learning all the other stitches will need to be done.

Love your defence of hand sewing!! :) I hate machines & don't own one, so hand sewing it is. Only, most people seem to think hand sewing is for crazy people only, or those with way too much time on their hands, both annoying attitudes. As you say here, hand sewing came first, machines only after, in fact a lot after, as *everything* was hand-sewn up to about 1860!

Remember that this is only one way of using the thimble. Many, many people push the needle with the top of the thimble, not the side. You get much more "power" this way.

Been doing leather work for some years but when the little one asked if i could sew her Halloween costume that she accidentally ripped i had to turn to youtube. I've worked with my hands all my life as a woodworker and other various crafts and being curious and self sufficient I thought I'd check this video out. I'm 67 and learned sewing in school, hand and machine sewing. I had a treadle sewing machine at home. If I need tension hand stitching , I single pin the fabric onto a cushion on my lap and then sew, moving the pin as needed. Works great for hemming, or any stitch.

You're right about people in public being fascinated with hand sewing or crocheting. I usually crochet while waiting to see the doctor, and once I looked up to see everyone watching my hands as if they were all hypnotized. It was funny and cute. BTW, what you call a hem stitch, my mother called a running stitch but her hem stitching was different in that the stitches that show on the right side were tiny and hard to see because she only picked up 2 or 3 threads. It takes longer but looks nice.

My goal last year was to improve all my sewing skills: sewing clothes and embroidery. Our school lacked enough sewing machines and the teacher spent all her time on the advanced sewers, the rest of us had to use hand stitches. My ex-military father taught me to mend and a neighbor or two taught me to knit and embroider (all as a child). I got my own sewing machine later and started copying store bought clothes and they don't hand sew. Seeing you reminded me of my former school and family training. Good job. I just watched what is now called slow sewing. It ended up being the stitches you are showing. Wonderful and interesting techniques to embroider and to do buildings in your design. Some did applique crafts using the stitches too.

I got a set of new reusable masks the other day that didn't have a wire across the nose and I had to drive a co-worker across town. I could barely see bc my glasses fogged up! So I'm hand sewing bias tape on them that the wires slide into and I always come to Sarah first to have my memory refreshed on how to sew!

I’m so excited to find this channel! I didn’t get to learn from Aunt Mamie and MaKitsey how they sewed their clothes so invisibly. Also, I appreciate the THIMBLE directions! My mother used the tip, rather than the side and her ring finger. I have tried for decades to make that work for me, to no avail. I’m going, this instant, to sort through all the new and ancient thimbles I have inherited to see if there is one that fits me. Surely at least one of my ancestors had fingers like mine.

My name is Mona I'm 67 I enjoy finding your channel here and your app whenever they gone and seeing the sewing my mom passed on and 98 1984 and I miss her but I'm glad she's in heaven but she was a fantastic sower she didn't think she was but she was and when she sewed something together you couldn't tell I machine didn't do it she loved doing it by hand matter fact she gave her Singer sewing machine away because she prefer doing things by hand and she sold some dresses for my daughter her granddaughter and she called it a straight stitch but I think it was a back stitch she was doing because the second stitch you did there it was exactly the way she stitched and it look it look perfect I mean it really look like a machine it done it and she wasn't trying to do it that way that's just the way she soldI appreciate you showing people though how to do it by hand I think it's getting to be a lost art and it's a really a shame because once you do some I'm a Nidoran a crochet hair and I can't see good it's hard for me to do that but I still do it once you create something from your hands then no machine Head touch no other person is Dutch there's something very satisfying about that specially when it's something you make for somebody else and people can do it think it's important to learn to do it by hand even if you're going to use it's not that you can't have both but I think people should learn to do it from scratch by hand ✋👌👌 thanks again God bless you

I have transferred my sewing ambitions away from machines and back to handsewing so that I could be with my husband and dog at the end of a long work day instead of locking myself away (again) in a room to be seated once again at a machine (again). So happy to have found this video in particular. Wish I'd known about your videos over two years ago by now. I had a sewing teacher pair of women who were absolutely the wrong fit for me, and things went downhill for me because of a few arguments with my mom regarding an incident between myself and one of the two women. Really it was mild and not a big deal, my mom and the woman just thought I was deliberately ignoring or being dismissive of her in the grocery store at the checkout aisle of all places, when really I was just distracted by unloading the cart onto the register because there was another customer behind us so I was distracted. I wasn't don't anything wrong, but I was the bad guy and it was like the last straw for me because I'd already gotten sick of sewing because I wanted to do more than what they were teaching, and I needed help a few times at home but mom couldn't help me, so I just gave up on sewing for a long while. I think if I'd had your videos back then, I would have gotten back into sewing much sooner because you explain things so well. Keep the videos coming please - I'll definitely watch them even when I'm not sewing anything because it's just fun and relaxing for me to watch stitching videos
