I've watched this a couple of times because I couldn't understand the pattern's instructions (not your pattern). Question... Why don't you use a twin needle for the top stitching?

I have done this so many times. For the 5 years I'm not sewing. But when it happens to repair clothes, hands just do everything automatically.
