Never thought about covering buckles like this, this is a really neat method!

Easier than the kits. Great idea. Thanks for sharing.

Oh my gosh I love this!! I grew up with my mom sewing one specific style of dress for herself for just about everything! She had a rather athletic, rectangular body shape, so she would sew tent dresses, but they would have a self belt that she had slits in the side seams of her dress and so the belt would actually feed into the slits, around her back, and fasten in the front. Every single thing she made had a self belt! This particular drape gave her a much more feminine outline. In fact, I didn't know till I was about fifteen that people didn't make a matching belt with everything they sewed. The belt kits? They were standard in the sewing stores when I was growing up, so I thought it was standard. I have reached an age where my figure is no longer what it was when I was 20. I am suddenly looking at my mother's dress design and starting to think maybe that's what I should do. The thing that's made me hesitate was the self belt. This is a perfect answer!

Thank you so much. I’ve been looking for belt covering kits everywhere and couldn’t find them or they were very expensive. This will help me a lot.

I’ve only ever used a kit once. it was last year and I didn’t like it it. I still ended up using glue because the fabric I used was kind of thick so the back wouldn’t stay on I’m glad you found this helpful.

These are great, thank you. I'd be tempted to sand the area you're going to apply glue to - that way the surface has 'teeth' to grip into. I'm also wondering about gluing down the fabric and then using embroidery thread to do closely spaced stitches to both bind the fabric and give it a final finish. I now need to experiment - thank you! _Small tip_ - vintage celluloid belt buckles are going for decent prices on the ebay. These things happen when one plays around with a rabbit hole - I now have enough buckles for 10 outfits... - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi

Thanks! you could sand it, but the time you would put into doing that you could buy the kit. the kits have teeth already on the buckle. Plus not all buckles have that indented area some are completely smooth. So it would depend.

How cool is this. Thank you so much. I plan on making trousers and wanted the buckle to match as a feature.

This was great. I'm old enough to remember using belt kits for my dresses. What do you use for the belt itself? I would love to see how you make the complete belt.

Just a heavy weight interfacing. I don’t use webbing I prefer a simple belt with sewn eyelets.

Bang that bottle of modgepodge upside-down like it stole your sewing machine. Put the force on the whole lid, should help break the seal.

Hmm you can always add a narrow strip of twill tape to neaten the back of the fabric on the buckle, so it doesn't unravel .

Where to buy the buckles

Thank you so much, I needed this because I’ve been trying to make my first belt ever and it would look so much better if the buckle matched the fabric, too! (: I looked online and the kits are hard to find and kind of expensive 😬😅
