In which I discuss and show the making of this dress, the sad two attempts at making it in the past, the glory of the Sleepy Hollow Dress, and my plans to recreate it in the future. Also, get ready with me! I show the different layers needed to achieve this look.
EDIT: Hi guys! I just added the closed captioning. No idea why the sound is so slow but I'm really sorry! I've turned off mid-ads so you can increase the sound without worry about the commercials blasting too loudly.
Thank you so much for watching my video!
If you too would like to make this dress, I go into it on my blog here:

If you have the same measurements as me, the pattern is free here:

Definitely! It may not be historically accurate, but I will keep using my polyester threads. I don't wear synthetics, but thread don't bother me and I'm not about to pay 10 times the cost for silk, or have to deal with waxing linen threads. My pirate shirt inspired by Bernadette's video isn't crying for long-lost linen thread :))

Am SO excited for the Sleepy Hollow dress! It’s my second favourite movie costume of all time (my favourite is Rose’s striped afternoon suit in Titanic. The one with the massive hat. I obviously have a thing for stripes). I am very much looking forward to this, and living vicariously through you. I don’t have the money to make costumes for events that don’t really exist where I am. So my sewing is more history bounding for every day wear- and I don’t think that the Sleepy Hollow dress is something I could wear on your average Tuesday at the local shops. Unfortunately.

Really appreciate your take on sewist's cavalier use of the phrase "historically accurate." Maybe it's possible but you brought up a good point about kids dying of measles and sewing by hand in tallow candlelight. More importantly, your stripe matching and attention to detail with the black and white thread is fantastic! Much of my work has been for theatre, opera, and dance. Although I have the benefit of 40 feet between the stage and the audience, when time permits, I try to use techniques such as your b/w thread and meticulous stripe matching - you never know when you build something if it's destined for a photo shoot one day. I too have used Sharpies, fabric paint, and ribbon to create just the right stripe! Good luck with the Sharpies and make sure to use in a well-ventilated room!! Congratulations on a great "Historically Accurate" dress!

What is historical accuracy anyway as Bernadette so wisely asked. I think you looked beautiful in all three versions, each had their own little story and character, that's what makes a garment unique. And if anyone is qualified for breathing sharpie fumes, it's you because you know at least when to stop lol. So excited for the Brunswick video! I wrote a whole long essay on how much I agree with you on historical accuracy in hobby costuming, but it got so wordy that I started confusing myself with the whole mess of it 😂 but yes, totally 100% agree with you!! Your dress is lovely, and I can't wait to see what you end up making next!! I've known that the movie dress was Sharpied for a while, but I've been thinking - IF one wanted to go for something a bit more traditional than a permanent marker, and one had the patience of several dozen saints, those stripes could be achieved by sewing on ribbon. Tons and tons and tons and tons of ribbon. I can't remember what dress it was, but I've seen a cream colored dress with black ribbon sewn on to make a really intricate pattern all over and it was so beautiful. I'd never have the patience, though, probably 😂

I think, historical accuracy is important *IF* you are specifically researching and doing experimental archeology type stuff (or just want to learn about history by living it). But I hate that it's become a judgey thing where some people look down on others for not doing that. We all have different motives and goals. Some people investigate and recreate garments with as much historical accuracy as they can and that is amazing and fascinating but there's no rule saying you can't be creative and have fun mixing different ages and styles and techniques. Like Cole Porter said - Anything goes! ;D

I really like your perspective on historical accuracy; the dress is beautiful & it's amazing the work you put into matching the strips & even alternating black & white thread to match the stripes. I hope this is helpful & not unwelcome, but you might like to know: robe a la francaise - said like "frahn - sez" with stress on last syllable stomacher - said just like the word "stomach" with an "er" on the end.

You should be proud simply for the skill and time and pleasure you invested in this dress and its predecessors. And remember! If the frills were popular in the 1760's, it was not unheard of for formal gowns to be passed down over the years! Perhaps the daughter didn't quite have the time, desire, or skill to remove the frills and chose to wear the gown as it was to her own formal gathering :-)

Um...so why say something that is misleading in the title? Just say that you are making the dress in the movie as is, geez. I was confused when I saw the thumbnail showing a much earlier style.

I got to see the dress in person at FIDM. I was there in school on my second degree in costume design. I got to have the librarian move it around (I no allowed touchy-touch) yes a costume library which includes antique clothes (gasp, eek!) so I got to see how it was made. It’s actually drawn on, so they didn’t match stripes. It was done post construction. Also there are pin strips next to the black strips which makes it pop on screen. That’s how they did that. The movie dress style is called The English Gown (English) or Robe a l’Anglaise (Italian) 1785’ s. The same as the pink met dress with the zone front but included the Robe a l’Anglaise Retroussée styling with the back gathered and fitted back on the bodice. See the Robe a l’Anglaise worn a la Polonaise, 1780-85 at the met. You probably saw it, it is a mustard yellow. As a “historically accurate“ costumer I approximate. None of us are making historically accurate gowns! We just don’t have the materials. Your dresses are beautiful never let the gate keepers win. I’m beyond thrilled with your gowns. We do all have a romantic attachment to this dress. I wanted it the moment I saw in in the now famous (with us) Vogue spread (I think it is vogue I’ll have to check) media teaser. I still have it, I was at FIDM when it came out, yes I’m old lol. I saw it in theaters 4 times in 99’ I was there for that 6 seconds of film. We all have our top five movie dresses of all time that we have to have. I also need Lady Von Tassel’s stays. I’m also obsessed with a dress that Lisa Marie Presley wore in a vogue spread by Tim Walker “tales of the unexpected”, for press on Ed Wood. It’s also black and white striped but lining kind of circus vibes riding coat thing full circle cut with a train. Keep on sewing because you art is gorgeous and inspirational 🖤

Thank yu so much Emily! I have another video where I draw on the stripes - though I chose to do mine before I sewed it together. :D

I just found you two seconds ago through Rachel and I am so, so happy and grateful because I actually understand your explanations and I really enjoy and appreciate the way you talk about the process that came before and about gatekeeping and I am just rambling but your are really motivating me to get back into sowing and actually make these dresses and skirts that I love and have the courage to wear them! So all this is just me trying to say thank you :)

I love seeing costumers' early work, like your first version of this dress! It's a great reminder that everyone starts somewhere, and all the imperfections now are just steps in the learning process.

Do you think you might add the thin green stripes on either side of the black stripe as the note says? Or I wonder if it was green striped and they blacked out most of it?

So beautiful, yes, it's amazing. I strongly agree, there really isn't anything truly historically accurate. Even history, they recycled older outfits to create their outfits because of cost. Like Scarlet O'Hara with her velvet green dress, making due with whatever she had. I do the same thing too. Not to mention, I'm sure there were fashion designers/ tailors making new dress designs from inspiration of older fashion. Great job overall. Love it. I'm actually not one of those costume designers who fell in love with the "Beetlejuice" dress. But I can see the love of the challenge of such a dress. I do know several belly dancers who have made the 25 yd. Dancing skirt in the black n white stripes. Which I usually design for them and their costumes.

Love your little 'rant' about so called historical accuracy. Thank you! While I think all of us try our best to get the look right, I am a firm believer in plain old pragmatism and with that I'm pretty darn certain that had people back in the day had the chance to take shortcuts and get their things done any quicker using machines, they would have taken that chance. Well, from many surviving garments, we actually know they did. All those unfinished or messily basted seam allowances give me a kick every time; all the hastily done hems, chaotic embroidery or replaced mismatched buttons make my day. Not only because they give me an excuse for not being perfect in my endeavors, but because it's so incredibly human and relatable. So, in the end, one could say that by not being perfectly historically accurate, ironically we are not actually historically inaccurate.
when you have plan B 😂
