I have ALWAYS wanted to wear the Red Dress from Baz Luhrman's Moulin Rouge, so I was completely delighted to make this for myself. In this video, I study the skirt in detail, and talk about the historical 1890s skirt it is likely based on. I then make the skirt and the bow, sewing it with modified historical techniques like flat lining, and tarlatan stiffening. I then try on the whole outfit.

the other name i have commonly seen for flat-lining is 'underlining'*, though my brain can't get on board with it. afaik that kind of naming comes from couture techniques? also, as if it weren't confusing enough, there is 'interlining' which is different from flatlining/underlining,,, Essentially, all of the layers between the fashion fabric and the next-to-skin lining can be considered interlinings, since there can be many layers/materials to a garment. Something like a tailor's canvas would be an interlining. BUT if there is only fashion fabric and an innermost next-to-skin layer (so typical modern linings), that innermost layer would be the interlining. AND if there are no other layers, the flatlining fabric would also be the interlining. Though at that point you might as well just call it lining!!

When I was trained in Australia, I was taught that what you call 'flatlining' is called 'backing' (as opposed to 'lining'), so I have a similar reaction when I hear about flatlining... That thick satin is gorgeous!

i work as a tailor in a wedding dress salon, and something we often sew for trains of gowns, is to make a little hook/hoop in matching thread with buttonhole stitches in the center back of the skirt (placement further down on the seam, depending on your height), and then a button covered in the same fabric at the bottom of the closure that the buttonhole can be attatched to. Then you can dance in your gown on your wedding day without tripping in your train:))

After the "flatlining" definitions, I think there needs to be a remake of the movie "Flatliners," but it's about experimental seamstresses who go back in time, or something.

Most people do. It's just expensive and more complicated to add them in. Most companies don't think you'll pay for that. Plus there's no where to put them in some fashions, that wouldn't be very visible.

Erika Cooper it could also be that woman’s clothing manufacturers are working with the purse industry to create a need for purses(since how are we going to carry our keys and wallet if we don’t have pockets? Purses ends up being the common solution)

It is absolutely stunning!! And while I 100% get your feelings concerning trains, I am so glad you made it with the train, it just brings the extra oomph to this outfit 😍 one question out of curiosity as I never tried it myself: if you add the pockets into the side back seams, don't you kind of sit on the stuff in them all the time? 😅

I adore this and all your technical skill! I especially love the iron on interfacing. Removing some of that "historically accurate" disposable income barrier. Besides, a victorian woman would've just GOTTEN IT DONE the quickest cheapest and easiest way possible.

I love this skirt!!!! I can totally relate to the troubles having a train can have when you're in a public place or event but there's something so fabulous about having a train that's sweeping behind you as you walk that seems so elegant but I think that's just the impractical/decorative side of me. I've used super stiff pellon interfacing (the one made for purses that's sew on) as hem support for an 1883 ball gown overskirt hem and I further stiffened it with rows of horsehair braid on the interfacing to give it more shape on the train to create enough support for that wavy effect I've seen on some fashion plates. This dress is one of my other other dream dresses because it's red, glamorous, and kinda delicious in a way that makes me feel so beautiful since red is a color that makes everyone look absolutely stunning. You look absolutely stunning in this dress and I live for this dress!!
@vickireinhart4594

I know exactly what you mean about trains, they're constantly being stepped on or in some cases I find myself knocking things down or sweeping things up with it. If I'm wearing a train and need to be mobile what I like to do is to add a pull through wrist loop at the very end of the train between the outer fabric and the lining and and when I need to move I'll pull up my train put the loop around my wrist and then make my move to cause minimal damage to both myself and everyone around me. Your moulin rouge recreation is just stunning, and the train is completely fabulous. Thanks so much for sharing! ❤️💃

Absolutely lovely. Well done. The finished ensemble looks amazing. As for living in the Red Zone in Ottawa - it is blessedly quiet. It took police a few days to wedge out the 'nazi' and 'confederate' flag enthusiasts / slash / 'protesters'. I now have tinnitus from the roar of the horns - as Mister Jell-O Biafra observed "trucks used as weapons". I'm hoping the fascistic trucker protests that seemed to have swamped over the US/Can boarder fizzle out before they hit your capital. Because no one should be captive in their own home to a bunch of violent thugs. In the meantime, we have lived a very small sample of what the people of Kiev are living through as I type. You know it's life or death when the city government issues long guns and Molotov cocktails to the locals. I can't even begin to imagine the terror they are living through. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi

I can’t wait to see what other dream dresses from high school you create next! I feel like you deserve all those dream dresses, especially after of all the work you’ve been doing at the hospitals due to the pandemic(also I am so sorry to hear that you’re experiencing a unique form of discomfort with a sewing term being present in your place of work for all the wrong reasons, I hope you’ll be able to overcome that). It’s fun watching you gush over how much teenage you loved a certain dress and how even as an adult that love is still there except now you have the tools and the power to make those teenage dreams a reality!

Moulin Rougue is a film I watched once and cannot retain memory of it, no matter how many times I watch. I just associate it with anger and frustration, I dunno why. I love hearing how much you research and your thinking and assumptions. I love the passion you put into your outfits. Love the black gingham dress of yours~! Wait! THREE YEARS AGO??? you telling me the art nov dress is three years ago?? what the heck? where has the time gone??? I remember all the WIPs on that dress! lol flatlining. True, I cannot think of another way to describe flatlining ^^; you look amazing~! Stunning! your husband needs to steal you in that dress for a romantic get away.

Beautiful! Amazing as always! I adore everything you make. What you call "flatlining" I generally call "interlining", which is different again to ""lining" where (as you would know) the lining hangs freely from the fashion fabric and "interfacing", which generally is applied to facings which require stiffening. Thanks for such an inspiring video!

Thank you for showing that moment of vulnerability re: cutting expensive fabric. It gave me such a sense of relief for some reason. I haven’t used particularly expensive fabrics yet (think the most expensive is a $30usd/yrd cotton upholstery for a 16th century gown. It’s all cut out but DAMN did I hate cutting it.

I recently watched the Brandy Cinderella, which came out in 1997, 4 years before Moulin Rouge. And this gown has the same very long bodice, as all the gowns in the big Waltz scene in Cinderella. I'm not a historian of any kind, but I find it interesting that pants were SOOOO low rise back then, and even dresses had a really long bodice, so the top of the skirt was so low as well. Very interesting!

Being tiny like I am - have you ever read the little white horse by Elizabeth Goudge, it was made into the terrible film the secret of moonacre but there are these amazing descriptions of tiny historical costumes - the main female character Maria is tiny and complains her best feature are her tiny feet but she has these old clothes laid out for her by another character and they sound so lovely, they're probably 1790-1820 [the film has weird bustles] and as a child I wanted those dresses so much, and when I finished growing at 5' my instinct was to learn to sew to make those dresses and so as a fellow tiny person I want to share the book with you - for several reasons, including it's just a really good book, in an early scene maria is embroidering in a coach which is beset with bandits and she stops embroidering only long enough to stab a bandit in the hand with her scissors - Maria Merryweather was always life goals, and I think you'll get a kick out of her story too.

Like on the original, it felt intimidating and make her look more bony and commanding almost, but on you it looks gentler? Like it was softer, or omething from a painting. Both were lovely and luxurious but it’s so weird how my brain interprets it differently!

You did an amazing job on this dress. All of the hard work and attention to detail really paid off. Your comments about creating high school dream dresses made me think back to what my dream dresses were in high school, and I think I probably would have wanted all of the gowns from Lord of the Rings. I did somehow manage to beg my mother to make me a dress inspired by Eowyn's green gown (the first dress we see her in) and a rather decent reproduction of Arwen's grey riding habit when I was in college. Part of me wants to make more Middle Earth costumes, but I think I am more likely to make hobbit inspired costumes, as I might actually wear these in day to day life, unlike the gorgeous elven and human gowns.
