Why do (some) people react this way when they see that someone is significantly better off than they are? And note that by Charlotte's reaction she makes nothing of the difference, and it's meaningless to her. (ie. she wasn't displaying a condescending attitude, etc) So then why/how does being better off than some people somehow preclude you from being a candidate to them?
... then of course there are those to whom you are a candidate because you are better off, but that is a separate issue ...

Eric's reaction to Charlotte's Condo in Sex and the City, Season 4, Episode 18 (Season Finale), "I Heart NY"

Not enough to BUY that place, certainly, but enough to upkeep it, AND not need to work, AND to be able to just "borrow" 30 thousand dollars in a diamond to a flimsy friend. So even though she "leveled up" by marriage and divorce, she would still be rich enough to intimidate this dude even without an apartment.

When I first saw this I thought he was being ridiculous until I was put in the same situation. The guy that was interested in me was richer than he seemed, had everything handed to him, money was never a problem, and always had the most extravagant items. Life seemed very easy for him, especially the way he'd talk about what he owns and what he can buy. I have to work for everything and be content with not having as many things, which I don't mind because it's humbled me, However It was a huge difference in lifestyles that made it intimidating and made me feel as though we wouldn't be able to really relate to each other.

I think this guy handled the situation poorly and lacked couth, but I understand how he feels. This experience can be very intimidating, on a personal level and considering how you compare to a person's past relationship partner's. Not to mention, it can be difficult to relate to someone in a different socioeconomic class. Not being able to relate to someone's lifestyle or upbringing could very well be a deal-breaker.

You should have told her the truth about how low the academic standards are at those schools once you get in. I went to Berkeley and two students my first semester committed suicide after failing exams and failing out because they were already on academic probation. All the suicides I ever heard about at ivy league school were basically never based around academic troubles.

I love affluent men, but not because I want the money. I just love the socioeconomic difference, and I find their bougieness endearing. It's so different from what I'm used to. With that being said, I am most likely not seeking an affluent man. Wealth most often has to be worked hard for, and I prefer a man who lives a more laid back life. I would much rather date a broke man and be emotionally happy with him. I just think wealth is cool and fun!

If I walked into a love interests apartment in NYC and it was that big I would be intimidated also. Pretty much everyone lives in a studio or with roommates until their early thirties, and if you're doing exceptionally well a small apartment.

This is old money park ave. If u dont know what park avenue is then his reaction is stupid! These apts are old money generational assests that pass down and charlotte got hers in a divorce from an old money guy!!! From the time they drove up to a park ave building he should have known what was up!! So what did he expect her to be living in an apt the size of the maids' quarters from long ago in a park ave. building??? Old money exists in a different stratosphere than the rest of nyc.

I think it would be especially difficult for men in this position because they're traditionally seen as the providers. Earning far less money than a woman can be a huge blow to the ego and make some feel emasculated. Strict gender roles are so damaging.

American dating surprises me. They smooch first and then let the date out with such formality and courtesy. They say women have sex after falling love but that's clearly not the case in that country. Or maybe the assumption itself is false.
