Sex Education and Tarbiyah of Children | A talk by Salman Asif Siddiqui

Parents, no matter what society they live in, are usually concerned about social interactions of their children and the society they have to deal with at large. As kids grow, the concerns of parents over Sex Education grows too. It has remained an important point of discussion among the social circles, education systems and policy makers for some time now but the solutions suggested & implemented have not been very satisfactory. Could there be a better solution as to what usually is in the air? Are we just hovering over and creating more problems instead of solutions? What exactly could be the concrete solution for the parents concerned on tarbiyah?

I think this is the most important topic that every one must discuss with their children .. I realize that we all are the part of these type of incidents.. because we don’t educate our children at the right age in right manner.... A child must know how to control his or her Nafs .. And i think this practice should be started from childhood.. The most important points that i have noticed in this video are as follows: We should build strong relationship with our children to boost the confidence of your child. Focus on the importance of shyness in your child. Your child should know how to defend himself by physical activities like karate etc. Discuss the importance of “Nafs” by being a role model. Make them feel that his/her home is the most secure place and they are too important for their parents. Diet is the most neglected factor parents should seriously consider it and aware the child also about essential nutrients for his body. Encourage his hobbies and activities it will protect his creativity and love for his work. Interference will suppress his talent... PTCC batch 30

LEARNING POINTS: SEX EDUCATION AND TARBIYAH OF CHILDREN A very thought provoking, enlightened and an eye opening discussion by Sir Salman on the brutal murder of innocent Zainab. This discussion is comprised of three parts i- Observations, common concepts, fundamental views on Sex education ii- 9 specific suggestions for parents in the light of Zainab case. iii- Queries After this horrific incident, every parent must question himself ... Are they really making their kids morally and emotionally strong so that they can defend themselves...... Can we solve all moral problems of this society by just forcing our kids to follow the curriculum offered in their schools?..... How can we built a MODEST AND PIOUS SOCIETY? Who is actually responsible for tarbiyah of our kids? Tarbiyah of kids is solely responsibility of their parents but unfortunately , in today's modern westernized muslim society, they have just outsourced this responsibility to schools. We can not solve our problems with the same status of thinking that has generated them...(Einstein) We can not solve our problems by living in the same paradigm in which these problems has produced...And unfortunately for the problems produced in a Muslim society, we, unconsciously doubt our own muslim paradigm. Solutions of these kind of problems can only be possible through profound analysis by focusing on our own world view. In today's era, the whole world and especially the Muslim world is being operated on the pillars of western psychological concepts.Muslim society is largely dealing their social, economical,educational and cultural aspects on the framework proposed by Western concepts. In our society, particularly on Zainub incident, we are in a negative reaction phase where we all are trying to cure the symptoms of that terrified incident but we are not heading to the root cause of that problem There are two ways to deal a chronic problem. i- Symptomatic Treatment: in which , we hit the symptoms only and try to eliminate these symptoms...but this kind of treatment is not an ever lasting cure for any problem. ii- Fundamental Solution: in which we focus on the root cause of any problem and make efforts to eradicate the problem from its root. REFLECTION: Very informative and really an eye opening discussion by Sir Salman. The way he put light on the dark sides of today's Muslim society and the real causes of this brutal and inhuman incident, is really remarkable. Now, this is the break point for every parent to introspect, to held self accountable that are they a part to flourish this kind of brutality in the society? Because whatever has happened , is somehow related to everyone of us. As the citizen of this society,we, all are responsible for these kind of incidents by not giving our kids proper tarbiyah in the light of Quran and Sunnah and eventually leading him/her to become a burden by spreading negativity in the society. Topic: Qasur Incident and Educational Curriculum: Sub Topic: Questions Answers 1. Can a curriculum help to finish the moral problems in society? (No) 2. How will a modest society possibly build? (To do Tarbiyah) 3. Who is the responsible of Tarbiyah? (Parents) If we reminisce our past then we see our forfather used to get education from parents or grandparents. They teach at home in childhood and on the other hand they do Tarbiyah. Child do not mingle with others and chances of spoliation are less. Definitely. But today We, as parents, outsourced the education totally in other hands. What a beautiful words from Salman Sahab that “in Western culture a successful man is a person who is passionate. And What is passion, Passion is some thing what intelligence and Passion become friends and intelligence make passion its leader.” We do see that people wish for so many things e.g. Wealth and other things and go after it with passion and get education and acquired that all. But we never think what the meaning of life we do good or bad to achieve our objectives. This is the main reason which is told to be understood. Tarbyah Objectives: i. Man become pious in his passion. a. Surah-e-Baqara learning b. Problems in Salah c. check and balance in Niyyah ii. Action of Self accountability reaches at the peak point. a. Clean his heart b. separate the concept of Western from Eastern Culture iii. Keep in mind the Presence of God a. Man is not alone and stranded b. God Consciousness These three aspects if a Muslim keep in his mind he will not impress from Western cultures. And he will never astray from the right path and never attract towards western culture. (Insha Allah) i. Develop a deep and special understanding with child. ii. Trust on the child iii. Give nurture to natural standard of modesty in the child iv. Make strong to defend himself / herself v. Don’t lead a separate life from the child vi. Make Nafs (self, psyche ego or soul) as an important topic vii. Give in time information of his/her body I don’t understand why don’t we hid such thing from him / her which are very important to him. So In my point of view we should make child own and give him ownership and teach him what he needs in his life. LEARNING POINTS: CONTINUED Living in the Muslim Society, we should make our kids understand value of one's own SELF(NAFS)...But unfortunately , Nafs is not our topic for discussion now...We as adult don't even know and understand the Value of Nafs but at the same time we are unable to make understand our kids that what is Nafs? How it works and what are the domains of our Nafs and how can we control it..... DOMAINS OF NAFS: There are two domains of our Nafs..... a) Attittude /temperament: b) Consciousness In the light of Zainub's incident ,today's education and tarbiyah's major goal is to produce a man who is dominant on his Nafs and can not let Nafs to control his emotions, passions and his consciousness. This is also the main objective to make our kids able to defend themselves. GREATER GOALS OF TARBIYAH: There are three greater goals of tarbiyah a) A man should be pure in his intent and become decent in his wants or wishes b) He should be in continuous process of self accountability c) He should be aware of Allah's presence all the time... Unfortunately , our education system is not pursuing anyone of these goals. If we want to solve these kind of chronic problems on permanent basis, so our efforts should be in three dimensions. i) The channels runs in our society for tarbiyah and education of our kids,they all should work to generate and develop God Consciousness in our kids.We can not substitute absence of God consciousnesses with any of the curriculum. ii) Relationship should be strong at every level. iii) Immoral material should be eliminated from all sources. What are the nine suggestions for parents in the light of Zainub incident: i- Build your strong bond or relationship with your child. ii- Develop trust and confidence in your child. iii- Nurture natural shyness in your child. iv- Make your child learn self defense v- Do not live your life separately from your child. vi- Make " NAFS' ....a worthwhile topic to discuss with your kids. vii- Make your child fully informed about his body at the proper age and at appropriate time(puberty) viii- Parents should be conscious about the diet of their kids... ix- Give your kids plenty of time for physical activities. This issue was really a hot topic and many people and so called intellectuals were presenting their respective ideas to overcome the problem but those ideas were actually more problematic.
