Except that the Sex Pistols were the equivalent of a punk rock boy band. Formed by Malcolm McClaren, a clothing store owner who saw an opportunity to sell "punk" clothes to the general public and exploited it. Sid Vicious was just a fan of the band who was eventually asked to join when they lost their first bass player. He had never touched a bass guitar up to that point. The Sex Pistols are as far from true punk rock as you can get. It was all marketing.

It's about the anger bubbling up in working class neighbourhoods where the promises of postwar social democracy were being betrayed, and while the middle class hippies and the prog rockers were enjoying themselves, life for ordinary kids in the cities was getting harder and more confined and desperate, with the mounting attack on public services, public housing and wages which had always been inadequate to begin with. Jonny Rotten enunciated the anger and pissed-offness without necessarily having the analysis at the time, as a teenager, but that frustration with conservatism and authoritarianism and the beginning of the economic and political crushing of the British working class is what they manifested. They didn't necessarily know why things were shitty, but they knew it was shitty and getting shittier, culminating in the merciless social holocaust that Mrs Thatcher perpetrated.

A left wing Labour party was in power when this record was released and they had been in power for 3 years.
@patrickholt22705 жыл бұрын
@@paulkeith6358 Left wing compared with how much further to the right the party moved after 1983, but not left wing compared with 1945 or 1966. The grassroots was moving to the left, but the leadership from 1975 was moving to the right, and had begun implementing austerity at the demand of the IMF, and under the influence of profound anti-leftist and anti-trade union feeling among the more middle class members of the parliamentary party. Those spending cuts, and the curbing of wage growth in the late '70s prompted the strike wave of 1978-79 which contributed to Labour losing the election in 1979. So neo-liberalism, and the plateauing of real wages ever since, began in the mid '70s, not in 1979, at the instigation of the IMF.

"God Save The Queen" by the Sex Pistols was #1 on the charts in the UK for one week; however, because the song was banned from the airwaves in the UK the country had no number one song that week, just a blank space at the top of the charts.
@99hammy995 жыл бұрын
The UK was also on the brink of Margret Thatcher becoming prime minister which resulted in mass job losses and rioting amongst the working classes in the UK. Just search for miners strikes on youtube to see footage of this country as a war zone. Thatcher was also PM when the poll tax riots kicked off in 1989. It was a pretty unruly time for England. Bands like the Sex Pistols were some of the only people able to speak out to mass audiences about what the country was really like at the time.

The interesting thing is that this song was banned by The BBC and various other media outlets. Shops refused to sell it but it still outsold the "official" number 1 single in the UK on the week of Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee. Remember that this was long before the days of digital download. You physically had to go out to a record shop and buy a 7" vinyl single. Rod Stewart was declared number 1 in the charts, despite The Pistols outselling Rod by 3 to 1.

Two things. 1. They are from England 2. The Sex Pistols were anti-establishment,..totally. The lead singer,John Lydon,still has a lot to say even now. Elizabeth has been Queen of England since the 6th of February 1952?? Until she died on September 8, 2022. This is real footage of the event. God Save the Queen was first released during a gig on the weekend of the Queen's Silver Jubilee but the performance was shut down by police in London given its inflammatory language and the public's outrage to it. During this footage 11 members of the Sex Pistols and their crew,including their manager Malcom McLaren,were all arrested. You can hear them say here "they're arresting Malcom".
