This is definitely not a real hutterite community. I just saw a documentary about hutterites in canada and they are supposed to be more like amish and mennonite communities, however this show is definitely staged and written. I know that not all communities are the same even if they are in the same family, but this one seems to vastly different and rebellious from the rest. Hutterites do embrace technology and have businesses in the outside world, but according to the previous documentary I watched, it's regulated and meant to be used as a tool to build their own communities in terms of income and education not to stray from their beliefs. I do agree with the soap making process though, there should be a new way of making soap or a different kind of soap to be made.

I am a ex hutterite from Canada. Even though i don't agree with some of the hutterites tradiotions ect, i want to let everyone know that this is false information. I don't know why this colony did this film but if you were to go around colonies within the usa and canada you would find that everyone works together! Women however need more rights i agree with that but what you see here is FALSE! and this is coming from someone that left the hutterite culture!

I could care less about gender roles. If in their society they feel women should do certain things and men should do others then so be it, but, I am for safe and non-hazardous work environments. That being said, these women should at least have some respiratory masks and perhaps some other protections.

I watched this when it came out 10 years ago. Other communities now use either store soap or natural shea butter type soaps. They don’t do that lye soap anymore. I hope this colony has moved up to better soap making..

This colony is a Horrible example of Hutterites. If you want to see what its really like, go visit a colony in northern Montana. Maybe buy some fresh vegetables like normal folk.

I love watching this show..I just found out about it..so far my favorites are Claudia, Wesley, Marvin and Toby. But the whole colony is so interesting and entertaining to watch!!

I don't think the point was who has a crappier, harder or worse job. The point is the division of labor being labeled as "men's job" and "women's job" They all benefit from the labor and hiding behind those pre-set excuses, saying it's "women's" or "men's" work is just horrible and disrespectful to humans being.

The younger high school aged guys don't seem to be all that chauvinist or sexist though. You notice that Claudia's brother, Carver never seems to bug her for defying traditions. He himself defies things to a degree also. So, I don't think in later generations that the chauvinism will be as prevelant.

As this was made to a womens or mens job, there was general sence behind it. Before there were tractors and shit which may can replace menpower. Women like to talk with women and they didn't just sit around, but worked...so if you do work it doesn't actually matter what it is, the time it takes is important. So for example, a strong man takes 1 hour to move a heysteck, but a strong girl like 1.5 hours. While stirring up soap can be done by both at the same effectiveness. Capito?

It was just an example about stop complaining and use your brain to make the life you have better. Not doing that makes you stagnate indeed. Maybe the show in principle is against their views that would probably shun vanity. However, maybe they're in some debt and needed the extra money from the show to pay it off. It's very difficult for family farms and independent co-operatives to compete with corporate farms without going into debt that bankrupts them or asking for massive government subsidies to keep their heads above water.

:-P How much would it really cost them to just buy some soap for the colony rather than make it? They have 69 people, the could probably go to a Walmart or Costco and get some for a good price at bulk, and spend that time they'd be making some to do something else to make the colony income, which would probably make up for more than the difference of the cost of soap.

I buy soap at the beginning of every year and it lasts me the whole year. We’re been doing that for about 10 years and we’ve never ran out of soap. We have allergies as well and can use only one certain soap. Even with prices being high today, they could go to a discount store and buy soap for the whole community. Lye soap is not the safest. Homemade detergents will also blow up your front loading high efficiency washers. I’ve seen them on other colonies.

Well...where I live every women does that what she wants to, so we already are progressed me friend ^^. The guys sitting there on the trucks somehow look made up and if not they're douchebags. First solution to the "extreme physical distress tzz" caused of the smoke would be not to talk about it for your whole life and complain, but to wear a f-ing mask, they're pretty cheap. If that's not enough, you can buy a whole safety gear for below 50$. If that's not enough, make it automatic or buy soap.

Well it seems to me that claudia is not a real hutterite woman. If a hutterite woman do the soap making for the long time since teenaage years she will not complain about it because they've doing it for a long time and her body was immune to it.
