This is easily among my all-time favorite movies. I love the "disappointing" feel of it, that you mentioned, in that you genuinely don't know what to expect out of it upon your first viewing, to the point where you're naturally disappointed that a character as electric as Don has to be killed off (for what feels) so soon. It's a short movie too, which I really love, because you expect it to be a 2-3 hour film, only to realize that you're in-and-out of it just like a snap. Every time I watch it, I'm always shocked by how perfectly-paced it is, not to mention the razor-sharp dialogue, and the tremendous performances all-across the board; also, the opening sequence is one of my favorite openers to any film (with that great track "Peaches" playing throughout).

Winston sells this more then McShane. Following the murder, Winston's anxiety shifts, going from fearful rejection of Kinsleys advances to playing the fool to McShane questions. It is his reactions of two antagonists that drives the plot. Both times the viewer knows little context to the why surrounding his fear. Winston in playing off a hyper animated Kinsey and subdued McShane. Winston's peformance really shines, shifting from panic defense to aloof. His protagonist conveys as much about the antagonist as they do. It is a master class. Kinsley owes him half an Oscar. Ps: love your stuff, keep it up, appreciate your work.

McShane and Kingsley are both brilliant, but I think that Ray Winstone's performance in this movie is very underrated. Much like in professional wrestling, it's not the wrestler doing the throwing that sells it, it's the person being thrown. That is Ray Winstone in this movie. His terror of Don Logan and Teddy Bass is palpable, but it's almost all done with subtle body language. It's a brilliant performance, imo.

Under The Skin has some great elements. The fact it had a guerilla quality to it gave the movie a verisimilitude you couldn't get with a 100% staged production is one thing I like. Imagine a babe pulling up alongside you in the street, a babe driving a battered Transit van, who looks remarkable like Scarlett Johansson! The reactions of some of the guys are great as a result. However, like other 'thoughtful' movies from the last decade or two, they don't hit the mark the way their fore runners did. Drive is no where near as good as Driver and other 70's existential features, Inception is bloody good popcorn fun, but that's it! The Nolan Batman movies bore me to tears. Not to knock your opinion, but I think UDS falls under the same banner. Good, better than the movies around it in fact but not a classic as a result. We'll see though. Who would of thought Arnie's Predator would be viewed as a classic decades after, for example. @Via

Both Inception and The Prestige I will watch again and again. The Prestige I will pretty much watch when ever it is on to the box. That movie will be watched in years to come. I really liked Dunkirk too, but the Batman trilogy, other than the first 1/3 of Batman Begins, you can keep. Interstellar was over hyped. I was fit to kill after reading all the 2001 ASO comparisons!! Still, I feel sorry for Nolan and Refn, having to be exceptional just as PT Anderson is active! "I turn round; he's standing there isn't he?" *LOL!*
@spicypickle88911 ай бұрын
I have a suspicion that saying "he was due back on Wednesday" was actually an attempt to trap Gal. Don was always due back on Thursday even though he lied to Gal and said that he missed his flight because he needed an excuse to hang around for Jackie. If Gal had killed Don during an argument about the heist then he may have just assumed they were telling the truth about being due back on Wednesday and taken the bait. It's only after Gal passes the first round of questioning that Teddy investigates further and discovers than Don did indeed get on the plane Thursday but he still isn't exactly sure what happened. Teddy knows that Don was escorted off the plane, likely arrested, and suspects that Gal may have something to do with it. Does Teddy think that Gal is a confidential informant for Interpol and gave up the heist? By the end of the film it seems clear that Teddy has figured it out. The heist went forward successfully so that rules out the possibility that either Don or Gal gave information to Interpol. But Don is still missing. It's possible that Teddy had the phone records checked to verify whether or not Gal ever got a call Thursday evening. If he finally knows for certain that Gal is lying about the phone call then he has to assume that Gal had something to do with Don's disappearance. During the car ride to the bus station, Teddy says "I'll have to drop in sometime. Pay my respects." The term "pay my respects" is a double entendre which seems to indicate that he knows Don is dead. He then cuts Gal out of the heist as payback for killing Don but also because Don was the only one with knowledge about what Gal was owed for the job. But Teddy is still furious about the entire charade and knows that Gal can no longer be trusted. He dumps him at the bus station as a warning to keep quiet and not come back to England or there will be dire consequences. Gal ultimately seems satisfied with the result as he finally achieved what he's wanted all along: To get out of the game and retire in peace. Perhaps that was Gal's endgame all along. He knew that a sadistic psychopathic narcissist like Teddy would never let him retire unless it was his own idea and viewed it as a punishment rather than a reward. This sentiment is expressed earlier in the film when Don says "I won't let you be happy! Why should I?" So Gal used Teddy's ego and greed against him by leaving a trail of breadcrumbs slowly leading him to the right conclusion while banking on the probability that Teddy will rip him off and be happy to be rid of Don. It was a very high risk play. But this sentiment is also expressed earlier in the film by Gal when he says "No risk, no reward".
