Apparently for Rowling, Alan Rickman as Snape was nonnegotiable; she knew who she wanted as Snape before Hollywood came calling for the movie rights. She wrote the character with Alan in mind. To her, no one else would have sufficed. I shudder to think what might have happened if Alan had said no, or if he'd been unavailable. Thank God he didn't, and he was available.
