TWISTED... off-setting rod rings

A few years ago I got a steal of a deal on a high end brand name #8 rod at a fundraiser auction for our salmon association. I was so looking forward to fishing with it, but the guides were noisy and it was hard to shoot line on the backcast. I stopped using it. Last night I rotated the rings as you suggested and the problem magically disappeared! Thank you so much for pointing out this simple trick!

Are the strippers wire that runs around twice? If so these are Recoils. I love Recoil rings but not the strippers, for that reason. If you can find 10cSt silicone fluid you can drop a few drops on the line while it’s on the reel and this can be a gamechanger, not just for the noise but also for shooting and hauling in general. Here I buy a 1KG bottle for 17USD delivered. Now there are free trade agreements here and so on. Finding 10cSt elsewhere seems to be challenging. 100cSt is too thick. 400cSt is like Gink! And it’s not worth my while repackaging it because I’d spend all my time driving to the post office 😆 but anyway if you can come across this I’d definitely recommend buying some! 😎

@@SexyloopsTV Thanks Paul. According to their web site, this rod has REC Black pearl recoil guides and Fuji Titanium stripper guides. I'll check with our local watch repair shop to see if he has a source for that 10cSt oil; if not, I'll see about some personal lubricants at the pharmacy. Very interesting discussion there! ArmorAll might look into that market...

⁠@@stephenrosenfeld833not a fan of ArmorAll because it dries out the line prematurely. Does it happen with all fly lines? Not all flylines are equal! Particularly the polyurethane ones. But even PVC lines can be very different. The silicone oil makes a huge difference and I started using it about ten years ago. The lines shoot better, haul better and for me at least, last about 2-3 times longer. I talked to Bruce Richards last year and he said SA lines have silicone oil in them and so no harm done with me adding more 😆

Hi Paul ! This really worked for me when I had that small slack line in the backcast. Now I always use this hack, Thank you ! ps. I also solved the problem with fly tangles using the tapered leader as you told me. Thanx again ! :D

Paul , i tend to cast with the reel slightly horizontal to get a similar technique like you are doing when i double haul , as my rods have small rings and the line tends to stick a bit to the blank , not that i know what i am doing EYES ROLL, i might have to make the effort and whip them as you have , thanks for that, all the best , David.

That also works David. The advantage of four piece rods is you can just twist the sections around to suit. I also coat my lines in 10cSt silicone oil which helps them shoot.

What about just turning the whole rod 90 degrees so the reel is facing out? Do any of the comp casters do that, or do most offset the guides.

@@waltercoady-jz2rf that’s actually a very good question, Walter. With a two piece rod I’ve certainly done that. But I prefer using the reel down to help with casting alignment. Nowadays my comp distance rods have ceramics so it’s not a problem (I have another configuration for this). For me though it’s more of a fishing casting tip than a comp distance tip - that’s just where I first learned it.

Would you still do that with an 8wt (or above) in the salt Paul? Just wondering how offset rings would be during the fight of a fast powerful fish. Would the joints have a tendency to 'roll' back round? Hyperthetical of course what with salt fly being 'imaginary'! 😊

@@3500ptx haha yes even for “imaginary” saltwater fish. My HT8 is set up this way for snakehead. Before the HT10 with Torzites (I’ll need to do a separate video on that!) I had a TCX10 and always twisted the rings out with that too.

Hi Paul, just went out and tried it, 8wt rod and line pairing with a #2 clouser (bend cut off) Significantly easier to slip line on the back cast. Brilliant! Thank you.
