Nigerian music executive and historian Ayo Shonaiya has shared a video on social media of Seyi Sodimu as he recalled how his hit single, ‘Love Me Jeje’ was rejected by American record labels.
The video which was recorded in 2004, shows the singer disclosing that after he recorded the song, he didn’t release it for two years because he tried to market it in the U.S., saying, “I didn't release it for about two years because I tried to market it in New York. I went to a lot of record companies and record labels...They told me it was hard to market me because I look American but sound African.”

His post read, “This is Afrobeats artiste Seyi Sodimu during the #Grammy weekend in Los Angeles in the year 2004, talking about how his evergreen song ‘Love Me Jeje’ was rejected by major labels in America because he sounded “African”… Who knew that twenty years later, a song by another Nigerian artiste Tems, titled ‘Love Me Jeje’ (inspired by Seyi’s song) would come back to that same Los Angeles and WIN a Grammy! Congrats to both @temsbaby and @seyimusic. Nigeria is proud of you.”
Over twenty years after Seyi Sodimu dropped ‘Love Me Jeje’, the song got another outlook on life when it was sampled by Nigerian singer Tems as one of the songs off her debut album, Born In The Wild.
The same song that was not marketable in the US in 1997 won Tems her second Grammy award twenty-seven years later.
Tems also thanked Seyi Sodimu after winning her second Grammy , writing on X, “I just want to thank the wonderful @seyimusic for his role in the support and clearing of his OG song ‘Love Me Jeje’. It’s brought the original song back to life for me and I’m glad that it’s getting its flowers today. A timeless classic. I appreciate you so much. Thank you for your love and support.
