The biggest difference I noticed was in the ‘Sunshine of Your Love’ example. There seemed to be a LOT more warmth and low end on the full-size ‘59 versus the Little ‘59. Is that your experience, or was it just a quirk of my ears?
@onevoiceinc4 жыл бұрын
You nailed it. The full size 59 has more bottom end to my ears, plus the Pearly Gates (especially in Run to You) has a tiny bit of scoop that smooths out the same amp settings I used with the Schecter. Just my take, but I think the JB/Lil 59 is a great versatile rock setup, while the PG/59 has that but it leans more to blues or even Pdub. Side note: the 59 is as close to a single coil neck sound as I've heard. Supposedly the JB ("jazz blues") was designed for Jeff Beck, and the Pearly Gates was designed for the Billy Gibbons sound. With the lil 59, it's great if you don't want to route out for a full size humbucker, but if I were building one from scratch, I'd go classic 59 all day. :)

I have to admit I don't hear an identifiable difference and truly believe people hear what they expect to hear. If you did a blind test, no visuals and didn't identify which you were playing, where you played one or the other and asked people to say which pickups you were playing, that would be interesting. My suspicion is that there would be a lot of incorrect guesses because they are so close, and I can't say I heard anything distinctive that would stand out in a blind test that would tell me "that was definitely the JB or the Pearly Gates". Great video (and great playing).
@onevoiceinc21 күн бұрын
@edpvideo First off all, Thank you for the kind words. Second, both pickups can hold their own in the same scenarios. (Both sound great, I think.) As far as you not hearing the differences, I did a comparison video sometime later on between the Boss Katana and the Marshall DSL amplifiers (without identifying which was which), and overwhelmingly people guessed the wrong amp. The two points of that particular series was to get across the point that 1. one doesn't need a bazillion dollars to get a good sound, and 2. use what you have and make the most of it. :) If there were ever two points that defined what I'm going after with this channel, it's those two. :)

Hi Joe: I enjoy your posts.and bought the Special Edition Telecaster because of you. Question from a 2-year, older beginner with about 800 practice days in. On the Almost like Heaven track, it looks like you are playing a D power chord rather than a regular D like most online tutorials show. I can't see the finger positions and they seem different in the 3:18 to 3:30 stretch. Can you tell me what you are doing and how you are forming the chords? I'm having trouble duplicating it, although I can just use a regular D Chord after the B. Thanks much...Steve in NC
@onevoiceinc2 жыл бұрын
I had to go back and analyze my own playing. (Scary stuff! Hahaha.) In that chord, I'm using the D chord, but with the 'A shape'/2nd position of the CAGED system. So the chord would be 5th string 5th fret, 4th string 7th fret, 3rd string 7th fret, 2nd string 7th fret. So yeah, basically a D power chord with an added major 3rd. You could also throw in the 1st string 5th fret (by barring the 5th fret), but I probably left that last note out, knowing my habits. As far as learning (which I APPLAUD always at any level any age), the source material is often times a great starting point. As you continue to progress, you'll find yourself probably using different chord shapes depending on your ear and what you're going for... or sometimes what color you're after. :) Two questions: 1. How are you liking the tele? (I can't put mine down.) 2. I've been thinking of doing an updated video about the CAGED system. Does that sound like something that would be interesting to you in your guitar journey? :)
@scb16772 жыл бұрын
@@onevoiceinc What a wonderful answer. Thanks so much. I've made good progress for an old guy, but I've worked really hard. The caged system hasn't really clicked for me...especially getting the G shape to ring quickly/clearly, even splitting it. So, it would certainly help to be able to leverage the caged system to enhance my progress. I absolutely love the Tele. Mine was perfect and pristine, right out of the box. It's my only electric, and was the right choice (especially before the price jump). I sort of like the sound of the JB (just a little) better than the Pearly Gates, but not enough to change it. I spent my entire first year just learning chords (and then strumming patterns), and getting up to music speed switching between them...and didn't worry too much about songs. I bought the Tele in May of '21 so I've had plenty of time to love it. My problem is that I won't pick up my acoustic when the Tele is hanging on the wall calling my name. In short: Tele, resounding yes, caged system, yes. Thanks for all you do...and the humor!

I put JBs in most of my guitars over the years along with other Duncan models. I love it. We all love it. But the right gear opens the door to making the music the best it can be.

I totally agree. JB and usually 59 have been my go to for well over a decade. The Pearly Gates was actually my first. I love them both.

@@onevoiceinc I played in the 80s L.A. metal scene as a shredder in a lot of bands. The JB was just ubiquitous. Nevermind that it came stock in Kramers, but was THE number one replacement pickup and still is. It beat out the DiMarzio Super Distortion by a country mile. When Duncans got popular DiMarzio's share of the West Coast market, which was mainly L.A., totally cratered. They're just too hard to work with most of the time. The JB is simply so much more versatile and warm. There's no comparison. DiMarzios are very dry sounding.

Someone didn’t pay attention in science class. To test a single variable accurately, all other variables need to be controlled, i.e. the same. You’ve got the JB in one guitar and the PG in a completely different guitar, with all the body wood, fingerboard, frets, body weight, overall shape, electronics differences between the two, thus rendering the comparison completely lacking in scientific method. Shame, I was looking forward to a good comparison between the two pickups.

If you're buying, I'll be flying, hahahaha! :D I do eventually plan on getting a G&L (which will be closer to the Fender) and I might try the same pickup combination as the Schecter. To my knowledge, the G&L is made at the same factory as the Fender is (then shipped to the respective companies for customization). But that'll be later on.

Great riffs! But honestly with all the effects and distorsion you are adding is not possible to hear any difference between the pickups. Anyway the sound is good. I think the more intersting point here is to know what kind of pedals effects are you using here, but you dont write down nothing in the description. So thanks so much. 👎

I'm running this through a Boss Katana 100W 1x12 that's set to emulate a Marshall '59. From there, I use the Tube Screamer (with pedal gain set to 0), reverb and delay. I also use the onboard parametric EQ. Should I maybe do a video of my specific tone settings in the future? I'm open to suggestions. :)

@@onevoiceinc Hi. Yes good idea if you can do that in particular the EQ and parametric setting. Regards.

Good news. I do read the comments and listen to your advice and suggestions. I put all my tone settings (verbatim) in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYe8ZoiIZZx4b9k Keep in mind, aside from the TS (based on an Ibanez Tube Screamer), everything else in the video and the tone settings are based on Boss pedals. I included the (built in) parametric EQ settings. They're screenshot straight from my Boss Tone Studio settings, but you'll be able to track what I'm using. :) Thanks for the suggestion!!

Comparision with 2 different guitars?.....naaaaa!

My channel isn't monetized, and I didn't have a super crazy budget to work with, so that was the best I could do to respond to some comments (asking for a comparison video). All that same, your'e entitled to any and all opinions. :)

@@onevoiceinc as someone who is just right now trying to decide between a pearly gates vs jb bridge in an HSS -- And whether or not to convert it to HSH with a 59 or use a lil 59, this comparison was crazy useful to me. Thanks for your efforts! I have 3 duckbuckers in now and will go jb duckbucker lil 59. Cheers!

@@attrition0 great to hear! Thank you for the response (and the kind words). Funny thing is I'm LOVING the Pearly Gates sound personally, BUT tonight I'm recording a song (for a future video and reunion with members from one of my former projects), and it screamed for the JB.... so it looks like the song will be recorded with that pickup exclusively. The JB was made for rock, so if that's what you're after, you can't go wrong with it. :) Oh, and stay tuned for a real deal music video in the coming months. I love doing the silly stuff, but this will be a legit video video. I'm kinda stoked about it.

@@onevoiceinc yeah I recently got a tele that sings beautifully with its single coils and its either convert my strat for rock or buy a new humbucking guitar ;) HSS will be a good compromise, and honestly both pickups sound great, I wouldn't complain about either!

@@onevoiceinc Hey bro, don't take it! it's not a question of opinion or budget .... a comparison cannot be made using different guitars. it does not make sense. this is objective. Peace!
