A new report by the Pulitzer-winning veteran journalist Seymour Hersh says the Joints Chiefs of Staff has indirectly supported Bashar al-Assad in an effort to help him defeat jihadist groups. Hersh reports the Joint Chiefs sent intelligence via Russia, Germany and Israel on the understanding it would be transmitted to help Assad push back Jabhat al-Nusra and the Islamic State. Hersh also claims the military even undermined a U.S. effort to arm Syrian rebels in a bid to prove it was serious about helping Assad fight their common enemies. Hersh says the Joints Chiefs’ maneuvering was rooted in several concerns, including the U.S. arming of unvetted Syrian rebels with jihadist ties, a belief the administration was overly focused on confronting Assad’s ally in Moscow, and anger the White House was unwilling to challenge Turkey and Saudi Arabia over their support of extremist groups in Syria. Hersh joins us to detail his claims and respond to his critics.

I wonder how many Americans actually pay any attention to what our government does? Do 'We the People' really have legitimate representation? Does the government belong to us, or are we funding a hostile entity?

the fact that they did not communicate directly with Assad's forces shows that they were only communicating with each other so that they didn't shoot each other's positions or planes. otherwise you have way too much Friendly Fire. America also wanted 2 attack Isis Army and not Isis so they made sure that everybody knew everybody was everything was all nice and neat. then Along Came Russia.

One would think that the leaders of a country would be more intelligent than those they lead. All that I have seen in 71 years have been stupider than most of us that really pay attention and think about it all. And they are all crooked as can be and money is their game.

Hersh is always a good read, but don't you think he's a bit too facile with his quotes of anonymous officials?
@user-jt7bx3ek8w
@user-jt7bx3ek8w 8 жыл бұрын
+TheSpiritOfTheTimes I think you are being facile if you believe that you could get the truth in real time from officials in the now with out them being anonymous. this is not the hole truth it is the military perspective and intentions and actions, every part of the government has different perspectives and acts accordingly, that's why it is complicated to figure out what is happening and why. you need to figure out what different people are doing and why and whos actions are being carried out.
@TheSpiritOfTheTimes
@TheSpiritOfTheTimes 8 жыл бұрын
+shireh awale Why the hell would you think they'd tell you the truth when they're anonymous? I dare say most people who work in the government have an allegiance to it, otherwise they wouldn't be there. Why would they tell the truth, that's not their job. Their job is to tell people what they want them to hear, maybe true, maybe not, but what is obvious that they tell Hersh what they want the public to hear. So maybe what they want the public to hear is correct, but maybe there's another reason they want it conveyed in such a way.
@user-jt7bx3ek8w
@user-jt7bx3ek8w 8 жыл бұрын
TheSpiritOfTheTimes you are totally right on that. I never take what some one in the government says in face value, but how are "they", there can be different factions in the power structure, and they maybe want people to hear something, but that dosen´t make it automatic true. The problem is there is mostly some truth in a shit pile of information finely crafted from government handlers, but you have to go to different types of media to get a small glim's of the truth. The real truth will only come out many years later.

I actually think Seymour Hersh is being a bit simplistic here. Just because ISIS committed the terrorist attack towards the Russian company airliners. Doesnt mean the Russian military isnt targeting both sides anti Assad forces. Be them Western Allies or ISIS. *The main players in Syria (excluding X militia faction etc) are:* *Kurds:* They live in Northern Iraq and Syria. Disliked by the Turks and have the end goal of having their own nation. A policy both the West and Turkey, a Nato member, wants to avoid and a potential risk for the Kurds becoming a "ISIS 2" type problem in the far future if given too much weapons or regional influence etc. *Turkey:* A large and important Nato member, in military, population and geo locational terms. Has strong regional interests. Do not want to lose those to ether the Kurds, Syrians or "anti Turkey" groups. Be them Sunnis, Kurds or whatever. Turkeys goals differ somewhat from other parties, including USA, and thats the main reason they want a "refugee" location between "them" and the Alawites (Assad regime) and the Kurds. While the West isnt too concerned about that. Turkey is also the reason the Kurdish PKK movement is considered terrorists group rather than "other". *Syria (Alawites/Assad):* Dictator Assad and hes ethnic group. A Western problem because of Syrias long term alliance with the East. Both Soviet Russia and later modern day Russia. *ISIS:* A group that has become strong over the years because of unintended consequence of bad US occupation of Iraq decisions (firing the Iraqi military / removing Baath party governmental technocrats (Saddam Husseins party)) and former Iraqi President Malikis (Shia) purge of Sunnis. ISIS mainly consists of Sunnis wanting the same as the Kurds. Aka a nation of their own, but their strength in organizing actually comes from the exBaath technocrats that in practicality run the X million population within ISIS controlled areas. ISIS is in reality a "Iraqi Sunni uprise" and its the Maliki purge that is the indirect cause for why many Sunnis rather trust ISIS than the Shia controlled Iraqi Government. *Russia:* Want to retain influence in the region and keeping Assad in power is a key aspect of that interest. They also share no love for Turkey because of their anti Assad position and them being a Nato member. While its not too obvious. Russia, as a major oil/gas exporter, has strong geoeconomical oil/gas interests indirectly via the region in the Middle East. *USA/West/Nato:* Heavy invested in the Middle East because of its modern way is based on the consumption of oil. While Syria itself isnt a "main" concern. The risk of the conflict spreading to Turkey or other or losing Iraq influence to more anti Western forces would detrimental to US and Western interest. *Iran:* Has had regional interest for decades. Now see that they have more playing room and are therefor invested in the Syrian conflict, trying to become buddy buddy with Iraq (both Iran and Iraqi leadership are Shia), getting better relations with Russia in the process while also conducting a proxy war with Saudi Arabia, who they have disliked for decades, in Yemen.

Strange that he says that Israel does not want jihadi groups close to its borders, in fact they are now directly on their borders in the golan region. Matter of fact is that al nusra fighters maintain a close relation with the iraeli border soldiers. Al Nusra fighters are being treated at israeli military hospitals. So unfortunately he's wrong here.
