That thing was pushing some serious 70’s rock tones. Almost classic Ted Mulray.

This sounds awesome Brad! Glad all the hard work paid off. I really dig this speaker. I have a WGS Reaper in a 1x12, pretty cool metal speaker but not my favorite. Really digging Eminence lately, I’ve had a Wizard before and a Governor and both have been fantastic.

Wow, nice sound! I am going to have to seriously consider a WGS 10C. (A 12C sounds very nice in a Deluxe Reverb, btw.) Great repair, great content, Sir.

Sounds great. The Fat Jimmys are good speakers and have a great reputation. They are manufactured by Warehouse for Fat Jimmy. I like the C1025 I put in my '68 Custom Vibro Champ.

Yes, the Fat Jimmys are fantastic speakers, but it appears this one has been driven very hard and now has some loose windings on the coil, probably from overheating.

I put a G10C in my 65 RI and pulled the Jensen … better highs, better lows… lost the harsh brittleness on the top end as well as filled out the bottom… all in all, a much smoother, clearer, more articulate speaker, couldn’t be happier.

@ yes, it came stock with a C10r, I didn’t mind it but I always thought it was kind of harsh and brittle… especially the top end. The warehouse speaker really rounds that off well, and does lower frequencies much better. Never tried the others you referred to.

RARRGGGHH yelling into the void!! Man, the G10C and G12C are killer speakers for Fender amps. I prefer the paper former offerings from Jupiter, but I’d be happy with a stock WGS. That’s what got me interested the Jupiters in the first place.

The warehouse sound good really good. I would also recommend the Eminence Legend 1028K. It’s supposedly the same cone as the original CTS alnico speakers used in black and silver panel super reverbs the only difference being a higher power rating. I put one in my 66 SRV when one of the original cts speakers got damaged. CTS speakers became eminence so it’s the same company. They used to be dirt cheep but the prices have gone up. Really recommend them it’s a different sound than the vintage Jensen sound but a really good sound.

Interesting, I just dropped a Jensen C12k 100w in my old fender m80 grey carpet red dial combo. Sounds better than it's last speaker that was a black widow but I'm still not sure I've put the right match together. Had to change out the reverb tank as well so that might be what is throwing me.

Direct on-axis mic effect. Still trying to find a go-to mic position that sounds like it does in the room for clean as well as dirty samples, but it kinda doesn't exist. Producers move the mic for different parts for this reason.

@@BradsGuitarGarage one of those zoom handy recorders with an Omni mic placed where it sounds good to your ears in the room could work. Sometimes an Omni on the floor can give a good room sound! Just my $0.02! Hope it helps.

Sounds like typical cathodyne phase inverter breakup to me. It’s what makes the Deluxe often more preferred for drive tones over the Princeton. Not a knock on the Princeton as they do amazing clean and edge tones, but when you are pushing to the point of phase inverter breakup, the long tail pair is often preferred over cathodyne as it sounds “right” based on what we’ve heard for decades. Of course all ears are different and there are tweaks to tighten up/smooth out the cathodyne, but with anything it’s a compromise

That really sounds quite nice indeed, VERY NICE. Hard to believe that someone had WGS special design that other speaker for them. I somehow suspect that maybe WGS accidentally designed a bad speaker and then dumped it for dirt cheap onto some unsuspecting shop as a special build, rather than take a huge loss on the whole lot. They (and others) will do that from time to time. Oops, that cone combined with that coil and that motor actually sucks. I have done that one myself, a few too many times, reconing speakers. You can mix and match some (quite a few) parts. Sometimes its magic and other times it's tragic. You are rolling the dice when you try mixing stuff around like that. It's just money, time, glue, paper, copper wire, Kapton, Nomex or more paper and some more glue.

Do you think there's merit to replacing the 10" with a 12"? I know it will definitely sound different and that it's a pretty common "mod". The ones I've seen people have replaced the baffle so as to not ruin the value of a classic amp.

Hello Brad. I must have missed this ... was there a problem with the speaker or was it simply a bad match for the amp?

There was something wrong with the Fat Jimmy. It should sound fairly similar to the G10C, just with a little less bass and a smother top end. They can sound a little "boxy" in a 1x10" but not terrible. I think the frame was damaged and the voice coil got misaligned. It's easy enough to do by over tightening the mounting hardware or a rough drop in transit.

That felt cap is now referred to as a "harmonica" cone, because it does not kick out as much high frequency sound. Fat Jimmy speaker are made by WGS for some shifty tech/boutique builder in California. It's one of those guys who sells mod kits to idiots. Four 20 cent resistors for $12 so your Princeton Reverb can have screen droppers and grid stoppers. No names. His reasons for some of the mods are a little questionable.
