A SF6 circuit breaker is a type of electrical switchgear used to interrupt and control electrical power flow in high voltage electrical systems. It is designed to protect electrical equipment and circuits from damage caused by overcurrents and short-circuits.
SF6 stands for sulfur hexafluoride, which is a colorless, odorless, non-toxic, and non-flammable gas that is used as an insulator and arc-extinguishing medium in the circuit breaker. When an overcurrent or short-circuit occurs, the SF6 gas is released from a chamber within the circuit breaker, where it rapidly expands to extinguish the arc and interrupt the current flow.
SF6 circuit breakers are available in both indoor and outdoor versions, and they can be used in a wide range of applications, including power transmission and distribution systems, industrial and commercial power systems, and renewable energy systems.
The main advantage of SF6 circuit breakers is their high breaking capacity, which allows them to safely interrupt high-current faults. They also have a long service life, and they are relatively easy to install and maintain. Additionally, SF6 is a gas that is non-toxic and non-flammable, making it safer to handle and store compared to other types of circuit breaker.
The main disadvantage of SF6 circuit breakers is that they are relatively expensive, and they have a high global warming potential (GWP) due to the SF6 gas. As a result, there are regulations and recommendations on the handling, storage and disposal of SF6 gas.
