Anyone else feel that this might be a hard matchup for Akuma? I have heard about in past games that gief's lariat chews through the air fireball approach Akuma has, in addition to the health differential between the 2, makes it a slightly losing matchup for him. Idk if it is this time because Gief and Akuma have some new tools but i was just curious.

Marisa and Zangief are going to nightmares for Akuma. Dhalsim is a problem. Characters with the ridiculous repeating hk mp drive rush combo are also going to be hellish for Akuma

Yeah every time I've seen this matchup so far it's an Akuma player needing to be extremely careful cause 1 bad interaction they'd just die.

In SF5, Gief could literally shut down the air approach from Akuma. The only thing I could do was ex Demon Flip dive kick from close range because that hits faster than the Lariat. Fireball or demon flip was easily negated using Lariat. But the gameplan was pretty much put Gief in corner and make him guess due to no true reversal except super.

No it just means everyone can’t play Akuma like you all thought, Tokido will master Akuma and then have no problem with Zangeif, but it will take skill, not just character.

@@studivan Well yeah not everyone can play Akuma, he is known to be hard so I have never thought that. There just has been a history of Akuma going even or slightly losing to Zangief in particular over the years. Any character can beat any character, however each one has matchups that are good and bad and should be noted so people know what to deal with.

Ive played this matchup a lot on the Akuma side and I love it, good to see its just as exciting at high level. Akuma dominates the neutral but the difference in health is a huge deal because with how high giefs damage per opening already is it often means gief needs one less opening to take a round off akuma than everyone else.

Demon flip seems really weak in this game. The frame data doesn’t seem all that strong, and it doesn’t have the throw/block 50/50 it does in some other games. Just doesn’t seem super rewarded no for the risk of being outright destroyed by a drive impact or reversal.
