last episode trivia: the welcome home/back in lights on earth (Okaerinasai) is written in katakana instead of kanji, and the final character is backwards, which suggests that Japanese is probably not still a living, actively used language 12000 years later

That they waited for them to come back is just another reason that's such a heart wrenching moment.

I'm a grown ass man, but every single time I've watched this criminially short anime, The end of this episode gets me in the heart. Every single time. Even more so when you watch die buster, which wasn't that great, and the ending is tied into this. I'll be 80 years old someday and this till still bring me to tears. Everything about this anime is incredible. The music is phenominal.

Waiting after the Voices of the Distant Star reaction to recommend GunBuster feels worth it. 👍 Other things to talk about: * GunBuster's vertical fins on its shoulder and homing laser attack seem to based on Space Runaway Ideon (brought up in the Macross Zero reactions). Gunbuster's mono-eye design might be based on the Zaku, which I find interesting considering that Ideon looks like a GM. * Jung's Giacobinid Meteor attack (she shouted its name in a previous episode, I forgot the timestamp) is named after the Giacobinids (discovered by Michel Giacobini), a Northern hemisphere meteor shower whose parent body is the periodic comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner. They're also known as the October Draconids and are named after the constellation Draco, where they seemingly come from. (Just took this info about Draconids from Wikipedia.) * There are two more GunBuster Science Lessons and a short for Jung's Sizzler Black. I'll post other references on the recommendation thread on Discord. Once again, thanks Theta. 👏

Great reaction to one of my favorite animated series ever. I'll always be thankful for how Gainax and Anno made me feel. I gave it a try because a friend from high school kept telling me about it, and at first, I didn't expect much, because it was so cheesy, so girly, so over-the-top, and the parody element was so heavy, but I kept watching because it looked very, very good and I loved the soundtrack... then something happened around episodes 2-3... and by episode 6, I was crying my eyes out half the fucking time. I mean, how can you NOT cry at 29:07 or at 42:02? ^^; It's so... lovely and positive (one of the most positive ending ever made, I'd say!). Anno's directing is the big star in Gunbuster, imo. He was a genius. But um... I wouldn't waste my time o "Diebuster" if I were you. Gainax made if painfully clear that the 2000's weren't the 1980's.

When Jaxa's asteroid exploration vessel "Hayabusa" returned to Earth, there were many posts in Japan saying "Okaerinasai" (welcome back).

That's the promise Jung made to Noriko before escaping. After returning to Earth, a Coup d'etat by the Space Force has occurred. she became the first President of the Galactic Federation. After becoming president, she set up a mission to rescue Gunbuster, but it failed and she went into cold sleep. The facility where she was sleeping was discovered after 12000 years. And when Noriko returned, Jung kept her promise. Nice, Big 'Welcome Back'

According to this authors, The work is set in a setting where Japan won World War II and is a parody of a world where Japan was the world's most advanced military power. The years 1988 and 1989, when this work was published, marked a turning point for Japan. The soldiers who survived World War II had ended their lives, and Emperor Showa - as you know Hirohito - had passed away. This work is also a requiem for World War II and the cold war after it.

Thank you for watching this work. I comment using Google Translate. The sense of despair felt from the overwhelming difference in quantity. This episode was inspired by a black-and-white movie of the Battle of Okinawa. At that time, the Japanese military reported to Tokyo that visibility was 30% sea and 70% enemy. This episode is set because it is a recorded video from 12,000 years ago. The characters are inverted because the exact characters from that time have been lost.

THIS. to be honest, at first I didn't know, and watched Diebuster first thinking they weren't actually connected just perhaps happening in the 'same universe'. boy the rush of feelings afterwards was unmatched.
