I was lucky enough to know Alan and played keyboards on a few tracks with him in the 1980's (via my great friend and great vocalist Susan Thomas, now also sadly passed). He was a genius guitar player with a real mastery and finesse that I have not heard surpassed. RIP Alan. So sorely missed. Save a seat at the bar for us.

Heard his 'Warning Sign' solo and fills, realized right then ... this guy a total genius. Taking big brain fusion and phrasing it into melodic instant accessible tunes you can whistle after the first listen. True master.

This guy was one of the best. I remember being totally shocked when I heard he’d passed away.

Holdsworth rated him. And that’s all you need really!

One of my favourite players, amazing phrasing, tone and musicianship. Who would have known he'd leave this planet only a few years after all his amazing work during the mid 80s. Still listening and inspired by your playing Alan, RIP.

Without any shadow of a doubt Alan Murphy was one of the most underrated guitarist's of his generation. Go listen to the solo on Go West's track 'Haunted', pure genius, feel , control, originality. R.I.P.

A brilliant player. Few people had that touch and colour in their playing. A Murphy solo always made you sit up and listen.

Alan Murphy R.I.P..... A criminally underrated guitar player as you say. I just did a cover of Alans solo from "Haunted"..... I couldn't get anywhere near his phrasing and feel. Amazing and unique player!

@@andym28 Allan was asked by Gary H to fill in also as a tribute to Alan M who idolised Holdsworth.....plus the money was excellent compared to small jazz rock venues Holdsworth would have been playing for all those years. I read that Allan made more $$$ with a dozen shows with L42 than in a normal year.
