This is the one editing technique that always sticks out for me. I never knew that there's a term for that, thanks for explaining this so clearly.

In screenwriting this is called a "pre-lap."
@writtentruthproductions3 жыл бұрын
How would you format it?
@JonDotExe2 жыл бұрын
@@writtentruthproductions Bob (pre-lap) That day was different than most. [some action] Bob (cont'd) It was the first day of my last. You an also just write (V.O.) either works. There are a couple of different ways.

This reminds me of the parody they made in scary movie 3. Where its cindy watching a lighthouse and then it cuts to a lighthouse with a ship noise that scares cindy.

great video. I was confused about L and J- this piece covers pretty much everything about them! thanks :)

Once I saw the no J & L cut part of this video in Pulp Fiction, which I hadn't noticed the first time I watched it, I went to watch that scene again and realised that after Vincent asks "What" to Mia's Fox Force Five name, she repeats the name and the repetition is in a J-Cut which was very smartly removed from this video to explain when no J & L Cuts are used. Still, these things can be forgiven for explanation's sake and that scene in Pulp Fiction also shows that even if getting-to-know-each-other-talk starts with no J & L Cuts, they end up getting them back when the characters are more comfortable talking to each other because that's when conversation becomes more natural, and in films that's how natural conversation works.

the best L cut ive ever seen in M.D. House when House is cutting of the trapped woman leg and shes sreaming in pain and there is cut to some other doctor's face whos standing a bit far away and hearing the screams. Powerful delivering and perfomance.

As an editor in a previous life, I never knew the name of these cuts but always did them in dialogue scenes as I always thought they made what you were watching flow much better. In my mind, without these subtle audio cues, I feel like I can practically hear the director shout “action” and then the dialogue starts. The Pulp Fiction scene neatly summed that up.

Moonlight. The scenes where we have the dialogue played over there expression to let your emotions be more engaged from the specific expression on the characters face. When the two guys reunite and when the mom sees her son. I wish you showed that example

nice, but i prefer sound bridge, a "preceding sound bridge" and a "succeeding sound bridge" "cut" gives them a nice inclusivity and categoriazation but anyone who hears or reads "sound bridge" - its hard to forget. specially since mass audiences go whole lifetimes without ever seeing a video editor in their life

i think beach part of dunkirk is more like a b-roll sequence then J or L cut. I think best example is Tree of life.
@iman50943 жыл бұрын
If we're editing an interview session with only one subject, are we only allowed to use one technique? Or should we only use the J cut? Or can we?

How is the No Country for Old Men ending an L cut? Is it because it goes quiet and ends? I thought an L cut would mean the screen would go black and Tommy Lee Jones would still be talking.
@Yuco14106 жыл бұрын
You can still hear the BG noise of the clock even its cut to black. Thus would make it an L cut.

There were also “spoilers” from a bunch of other movies but youre worried only about dunkirk. Plus at the time this comment was posted, dunkirk had already been out for half a year
