It's awesome that Clockwork Orange's opening scene went from a zoom to a dolly and you could hardly see the transition. Great video!

As dated as they are I love zooms and love to use them when making films, two of my favourite uses of zooms are the 1967 series the prisoner and tarkovsky’s Solaris

10/10 on the quiz. I was little unsure with 8 one from CONJURING only because of very tight framing and pretty fast zooming and knowing that this movie in modern. But I also realized that space beetwen object do not changes in time so it fits to zoom. Great vid!

I also find Steven Soderberg's' work for the Ocean's Trilogy to be a great modern use of zooms to establish the location and movement of many different people in a scene

Is number 9, Casino (4:29) purely a dolly? Obviously it's mostly dolly but it feels like a little zoom is thrown in too to me. Can you combine a dolly in with a zoom in?
@IndieMusiCon5 жыл бұрын
Sure, a zoom zoom. It's probably up to personal preference in terms of whether it actually has any positive effect on the overall zoom.

My take on this... WARNING, long post. OPINION? Dolly = Zoom, or Dolly vs. Zoom There are two schools of thought regarding Dolly shots vs. Zoom shots... ------ 1.) Perhaps the more popular opinion is that they are two different things. These folks insist that a zoom is accomplished with a special lens that can adjust focal length either manually or with motorized controls. The dolly shot on the other hand is accomplished by physically moving the camera closer to, or farther from the subject, using a dolly. It's pretty much the same idea as a furniture dolly, only a LOT more expensive. 😆 2.) I was taught what may be a much less popular viewpoint. A dolly is not different from a zoom, instead, it is merely one way among many, to achieve the zoom effect. ------ There are lots of good reasons for #2 being more correct, despite its probable lack of popularity. First, there is no doubt that there are different types of zooms and the effect can be created a number of ways. There are actual mechanical lenses which physically alter the focal length. There are cameras, and camcorders that can digitally create the effect. There are even cameras that combine both digital and optical methods for an "extended zoom." There are editing programs that enable you to create the zoom effect in post-production. There are even many other uses of the term "zoom" that suggest a bunch more... if you are on a desktop computer as you read this, you might be able to "zoom" in or out of your browser view to increase or decrease the size of the text and images. You can zoom in and out using the pinch motion on your touchscreen, and you can even use it figuratively, like when you're trying to zoom in on the cause of a problem. A dolly move on the other hand, is completely specific to one thing only - a particular combination of equipment and the movement of a camera. It's yet another method of achieving the zoom effect. Second, there is often no easy way to tell the difference between a dolly move and an optical zoom. Yes the actual physical movement of the camera does change the perspective of the scene, but it's often imperceptible. Even this video which claims "A Zoom is not the same thing as a Dolly" ironically starts by fooling the viewer with dolly shots while making us think they are zooms! Are you just messin' with me Fandor? 🤔 Look at Jack, now look at William H., now back at Jack... dolly? zoom? dolly... zoom? They both get larger in the frame = zoom. You all know what I think the correct answer is... They are ALL zooms, but some of the zooms were accomplished with a dolly move. HA! Many dictionaries also support the idea that there are multiple ways to achieve the zoom effect, with general definitions such as: • [noun] - a means of producing an enlarged image (as in a camera). • [noun] - a camera shot that changes smoothly from a long shot to a close-up or vice versa. • [verb] - (of a camera) change smoothly from a long shot to a close-up or vice versa. These even hint at a dolly move! • [intransitive/transitive] - if something such as a camera zooms somewhere, or if you zoom it somewhere, it moves so that it makes something seem much closer or farther away. • [phrasal verb] - to adjust a camera to make a person or thing being photographed appear larger or closer. So, what's your opinion? Dolly = Zoom, or Dolly vs. Zoom?
