Abstract: The FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) principles have created significant momentum in the research community, recognizing a need to improve the quality of research by establishing common reproducibility standards. However, bridging these principles with the practicalities of using cyberinfrastructure remains challenging due to its diversity and domain-specific tasks evident in outcomes of working groups on FAIR for Research Software, FAIR for Virtual Research Environments, FAIR for Workflows, etc. Science gateways support open science, online collaboration, sharing data and tools, and re-using methods and workflows. They are also used by thousands of scientists, educators, and students every day. Science gateways provide an excellent opportunity to achieve FAIRness of research data and software while also bringing in a lot of complexity with the different layers of FAIRness: FAIRness of the science gateway framework, FAIRness of services, FAIRness of embedded data, to name a few. The team behind the science gateway framework nanoHUB has addressed some challenges and offers users measures to improve FAIRness.
