The boiling was horrific. In Blackthorne's England boiling was used for people guilty of poisoning people. It was a hard era everywhere. The show is set 12 years after the Spanish Armada tried to invade England and depose Elizabeth I. The Dutch are in the middle of a revolution to throw out Spanish rule. England is helping them which is why Blackthorne is with the Dutch. He is a privateer, a mercenary, fighting for Holland against Spain and their ally Portugal. That's the Protestant vs Catholic stuff in the opening narration. The Portuguese don't want the Japanese to know they don't run everything in Europe.

Yeah, Europe was going through the Eighty Years' War at this time which a large part of it was b/c of the Protestant Reformation that threatened the Catholic Church. 👍

Shogun was a book and has been a movie ect in the past. It's a dramatized telling of how the Tokagawa shogunate came to control Japan. In the show the character Yoshii Toranaga is a dramatized version of Tokagawa Ieyasu who unified Japan and became Shogun and his family ruled Japan from 1603-1868, this is known as the Edo period in Japanese history due to Tokagawa's home base in the city of Edo which was later renamed Tokyo.

after getting halfway through the series, this version blows the original series away. cosmo, anna, and hiroyuki are now my definitive blackthorne, mariko, and toranaga. 😄

Bonus trivia: It turns that decades ago, Hiroyuki Sanada had already played Tokugawa Ieyasu (once) and Ishida Mitsunari (twice)!

The guy playing Kashigi Yabushige, he who fell down the mountain into the water is Tadanobu Asano. He played "Hogun" in the Thor Marvel movies. Im so glad you finally decided to watch this show! Its lit!

Marvel has wasted a lot of great asian actors. Tadanobu Asano, Michelle Yeoh and Don Lee all reduced to side characters. I highly recommend Tadanobu's movie Mongol where he plays Ghenghis Khan. Such a great movie

*'Shogun'* is a novel written by James Clavell. There was a mini series based on the book in 1980. I believe it was aired on ABC.

In the 80 the Book the Show is based on they did already a Show out of this with Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune. I was a Kid and can remember a little bit but this Show is much better made, every detail is so real and authentic

It's from a book. Based on true events. The pilot is based on a real English navigator the first to reach Japan in the 1500s loosely based lol

Through the first 7 episodes this show is a 10/10! This episode is great. John and Toranaga are really good characters. The costumes, setting and acting is awesome. Mariko is gorgeous and also the courtesan is sexy af, sheesh. Great show!
