Chinese culture begins with the I Ching which explains the functions of the celestial body, earth and man. Since man exists in between Heaven and Earth, therefore , Chinese people call themselves as Zhong Guo Ren. Both Confucius and Laotze are students of the I Ching but they interpret the I Ching differently. Confucius takes the micro view that life is a structural process. His dao is a step by step approach to achieving one's goal. In his Da Xue, Confucius explains the goal of Da Xue, its meaning and the method to self transformation. From a crawling worm to a butterfly requires the method of self discipline and focus. In his Zhong Yong master thesis, Confucius painstakingly details the process of reifying an idea into reality. In the Western tradition, the Stoics have similar views, especially represented by Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus . The way toward harmony is to help everyone to become the best of himself. In a symphony , we have all types of instruments playing at the same time and yet the sound is amazing to the ear. On the other hand, Laotze takes the macro view of the I Ching and states his Dao exists before Heaven and Earth. Therefore, the Dao exists through out the universe. His idea of the peaceful and natural progression of life begins with the end product of the person himself. Everyone wants a peaceful and satisfying ending. Therefore, one must act in a way that invites peaceful coexistence with the rest of the world. His Dao is to help the opposite to become confident enough so that he is not afraid of life. Synthesizing the opposites in a way that produces balance without dominance. Wu Wei is a warning against the attempt to control the other part because there is unintended consequence . In the Western tradition, Heraclitus, Hegel and Marx have the same thought. Presently, in China, the government calls this socialism with special characteristics. Thank you.
