As a kid, misleading trailers would upset me so much. I asked my parents to take me to see Snow Dogs as a kid because all the trailers made it seem like the dogs talked. Imagine my surprise when that’s like a 10 minute dream sequence in the middle of the movie

Yeah, as bad as Kangaroo Jack was, Snow Dogs from Disney was the real culprit why rival studio Warner Bros chose to take a R Rated comedy and forced the filmmakers to turn it into a PG film with false advertising involving the few scenes of the Kangaroo.

I was 6 years old when, as a special treat, my mom took me to the cinema and let me pick out the movie. I was incredibly excited for Kangaroo Jack and couldn’t wait to enjoy this very special night with just us two. I cried on the way home. Not only was I disappointed, but I still remember thinking how unbearably awful (from a kindergarteners perspective at least) it was and my mom telling me it was one of the worst things she had sat through in years. I was convinced my mother would absolutely never do movie ‘date night’ with me again. While that would end up being true, we did stop by a store and pick up a vhs copy of Willy Wonka so it ended up being a pretty okay rest of the evening. Still, hope everyone responsible had, or continue to have, miserable lives as a result.

The Grey is another good example, an existential drama about people coming to terms with mortality in the face of certain death and the trailer makes it look like a dumb thriller where Liam Neeson punches wolves in the face.

I remember working at Hollywood Video when March of the Penguins came out. Parents were PISSED because they thought it was going to be a cute penguin movie but in reality it was like watching a nature documentary. There was, in particular, a scene where penguins get attacked/eaten. We had to put up a sign near the shelf warning parents. Also this reminded me of when Ted came out. People thought it was a cute talking bear movie but didn't bother to read the rating on the movie. The bridge to Terabithia fucking hit me hard. My grandma took me to see the film, she knew I loved fantasy and thought it would be a good movie to take me to. This movie came out two years after my best friend was murdered. When she died in the movie I had to go to the bathroom because it took me back to losing her. I honestly think it was the trailer that convinced my grandma it would be a good movie to take 11 year old me to.

One of the most infamous is the Alien 3 Teaser Trailer that heavily implies that the Xenomorphs invade Earth. There's nothing in the finished film close to that. In fact the trailer is odd, as although Aliens On Earth had been a script idea, it was long gone when the film was shooting, when this trailer was made.

Back when I was in early primary school, once or twice a year, my school used to take us to the cinema. It was a great treat, and one of my fondest memories was being 5 years old and watching 'Spirited Away' for the first time; I was completely enchanted and mesmorized, gazing up at the screen, in awe that you could make such fantastical and warm movies. A couple of others were 'Holes', 'The Wild', and 'Arthur and the Invisibles' but none of them could compare to the emotions that 'Spirited Away' left with me. Except for 'Bridge to Terabithia'. A perfectly harmonless, fantastical movie, starring the girl from Willy Wonka and some polite looking boy, that our head teacher watched the trailer and thought that this movie would be a great choice for our next trip... The bus back that day was filled with 40, 7 year old-kids sitting in complete silence, with a couple of girls sobbing up in the back. Not even the teachers spoke. We all just went back to school, and spent the remainder of the afternoon solving quiet math problems in our jotters. Safe to say, a lot of very apologetic letters were sent out to parents that day, and now that I remember it, yeah, that was the last time we ever did school cinema trips.

Also on the note that Tarantino didn’t allow other editors is wrong. Sally Manke has often been credited for refining Tarantinos films in the editing room. After her passing, you can see just how unrestrained and arguably bloated (though I still love) films like hateful eight and Hollywood are. Inglorious takes its time but it does such a great job with a suspenseful buildup on more than enough occasions (the opening scene, the bar scene, the strudel scene, the bar scene, the literal last act)

Recently started listening to this from the beginning on Spotify after watching a few of the deep dives and just got to this episode. I was inspired to comment after listening to the global reach of your podcast as I'm a Canadian myself living in Panama. With respect to misleading trailers, I think there's a difference between feeling misled for a movie you've paid to see in the theatre (note the proper Canadian spelling) vs. scrolling through Netflix. In a theatre, it's more of "event", or a night out. You've made a conscious decision to leave your house to enjoy yourself and you've made an effort to see a movie you think you will like. Compare that to looking through a list of recommendations and you see Drive and think "this'll be a nice action movie" and when it isn't, the reaction is "meh, that was a waste of time". Incidentally, two trailers I've always loved are the ones for Comedian (by Jerry Seinfeld) and I ❤ Huckabee's.

Kick-Ass could definitely qualify as a misleading trailer. After watching the original trailer, I thought the movie seemed like an overly upbeat and generic action movie. The tone of the actual film was so different, and the violence was a crazy surprise along with it.

I was 6 years old when my mum took me to see the 1980 Flash Gordon at the local cinema. I enjoyed it so much that the following year she took me to see Clash of the Titans. After the film she asked me if I'd enjoyed it, to which I replied: "Sort of...but...where was Clash?" I was also one of the kids in the U.K. who was taken to Watership Down (1978) because parents thought it was a film for children. I was four years old when I watched it. (I posted a link to the Guardian article about it being reclassified but KZbin deleted my post) More recently, the trailer for A Million Ways to Die in the West, for me at least, made it look like a totally different type of humor to what we actually got...but I think it was worth it because we got a couple of really funny trailers. I found Hamlet 2 (2008) to be a similar kind of let-down.

One of the earliest trailers I remember including footage not in the final film was Heat. I had seen the film 1 million times but never saw the trailer than years later by accident. I stumbled across the trailer and found footage in it that was not in the final film including a scene where De Niro says a stupid line about being double the worst trouble someone’s ever had. Trailers in recent years, including the dark Knight, have had a habit of including alternate, takes from the one that’s used in the final film when heath ledger joker says here’s my card it’s completely different from the take that was used in the film .

I think the trailer for Passengers (2016) was also misleading (in a good way). It presents the movie as a Sci-fi love story which wasn’t… kind of. I'm a big fan of the direct-to-DVD Garfield movie trilogy. Garfield Gets Real, Garfield's Fun Fest, and Garfield's Pet Force. The trailers for them are so stupid, though. They barely explain the plot, and mostly show montages of slapstick moments. It makes them seem like just mindless kids comedies. I don't see them that way, the genre is more adventure than comedy. There's lots of world building, some emotional moments, and action scenes with an epic soundtrack. If you wanna see for yourself, the trailers are on KZbin, and the movies are free on The Roku Channel in 1080p. (They're hard to find in good quality anywhere else.)

What was ironic about the Bridge to Terrabithia trailer is that as a kid who had read and enjoyed the book, the trailer made me assume the film would be bad because I thought that they were going to change the story to focus only on the fantasy elements and none of the realistic, dramatic elements. I think another argument can be made for a few of the movies with misleading shots in the trailer. Sometimes movies have to change plot points or scenes very close to release (i.e. test ratings, censorship board, producers/higher ups wanting changes made), and it could be the case that they did intentionally plan on releasing the scene as is but they just had to change it before they finished. But a lot of the examples you brought up obviously intentionally tried to mislead with the shots they put in the trailer, but just wanted to give benefit of the doubt to some that maybe didnt on purpose.

I would say that having a "this is not in the final film" disclaimer at the bottom of the video when a bit of a trailer won't be as shown would be fine. It's not unusual, you get the same thing with game trailers when there's a cutscene made specifically for a trailer, even other forms of advertising like car adverts have similar when they say "specification is different in [your country]". It just seems like the natural thing to do, since the intent of showing what the film is like is still there, but with something to tell you that it's edited or not in the final film. The main issue would be if they changed around things or cut after the trailer released, but in this case a disclaimer saying "may be changed" or similar could be used. I've heard about Kangaroo Jack from KZbin vids before, I haven't watched it but from what I've heard those kinds of trailers 100% need to be clamped down on. It reminds me of the mobile game ads on KZbin that are different to advertised, but since the bit advertised is a small portion of the game it's not classed as illegal because it's *technically* in the game and it gets people to play and spend money. It's very similar to these film trailers in that the scope of what counts as misleading enough to be illegal needs to be expanded I feel, as most companies aren't gonna be voluntarily nice if it costs them money in either active costs or lost sales. The last film you talked about, Bridge to Terabithia, also sounds like it'd fall into this category too and is quite probably even worse than the Kangaroo Jack trailer from what was said in the podcast. Found the channel from the Futurama vid, decided to have a look at this podcast episode and it was quite good 👍

But all of Frozen made it seem like it was about true love between a man and a woman, the last few minutes shows the twist of it being about the love of the sisters. So if they would have done that in the trailer, the trailer would have ruined the twist. It would have been like the trailer for The Sixth Sense giving away the twist, that would have been dumb.
@ItWasAShtShow

That’s necessarily true. It’s not a plot twist, it’s the entire theme of the movie.

The biggest trailer upset for me was burn after reading. I thought it was a comedy. So my mom and best friend went with their mom. The movie was shit and had nothing to do with the trailer.

Uff. KZbin strike again, y’all. I thought you guys were on hiatus, so I go to the channel to listen to some old pods and see that you guys have several new videos out and I wasn’t subscribed. Unless… are… are you mad at me? :/ naaaah it’s fine. On the plus side: there’s plenty of content to catch up on!

Iron Man 3 has, without a doubt, the most misleading trailer ever created. I was soo pumped from that trailer and was completely let down.
@ItWasAShtShow
@ItWasAShtShow Жыл бұрын
Again, that isn’t the trailers fault. It delivered the type of movie you’d see. If you felt robbed by the villain reveal, that’s your opinion of the film itself.
@epiclx5978
@epiclx5978 Жыл бұрын
@@ItWasAShtShow but the trailer literally portrayed the villain as being something completely different than what we got. Not only that, but the tone of the movie was entirely different. I was led to believe that it would take a more dark knight esque tone and I was all for it instead of the Jokey Smurf Disney schlock we got. How is that not misleading? I think you and I have different definitions of misleading.

Thank you so much guys. You guys have the same feeling about Inglorious Bastards that I have. Many people keep telling me that it's Tarantino's best work. I strongly disagree. It comes no where close to Django or Pulp Fiction. Christoph Waltz was amazing in it though.

Since Rapunzel is one of the more famous Brothers Grimm tales _Tangled_ was released as _Rapunzel_ here in Germany. But they still used the same trailer... kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHOQnq2oeLiDgrs Funnily enough the German title of _Frozen_ - which as you mention was originally supposed to be called _The Snow Queen_ - is _Die Eisprinzessin_ (The Ice Princess).

I had to stop listening to this one. Why are Americans so desperate to let corporations lie to them for money? Yes the actual example of Ana Day Armas not being in the final cut is an odd example of this to go to court over but if you want to talk about slippery slopes if the court rules in favour of the studio then what? They can just put whatever they want in the trailers? And them not being able to do that is scary to you?

I made the worst movie-watching decision of my life due to the misleading trailer for Blade Runner 2049. The trailer made it lool like an action-packed thriller, when actually was a thoughtful, slow, philosophical sci-fi in the spirit of the original.
